my cat has herpes which apparently makes him more vulnerable to infections. would that make him more at risk if covid is brought into his home?

To my knowledge, there have not been any kind of studies done that could prove this either way. Theoretically anything causing stress to an animal's immune system can predispose them to other infections. Keep in mind that for the number of human COVID cases there have been, infections in pets are still not something we seeing a lot of. We know certain species can get it, but we're not seeing an influx of sick animals with COVID like we are with people. Well, traditional pets anyway. I would worry a lot about pet primates...
