burns on blackstone walls
tw for mention of smoking/cigarettes, canon typical swearing
The sky is clear tonight, and Tommy finds him standing atop the wall under a jewelbox sky. Wilbur looks out over L'manberg, seemingly lost in thought. Smoke rises from the lit cigarette that slowly burns away, untouched by his lips. Tommy almost turns back, not wanting to disturb his time alone. He decides against leaving, closing the distance but stopping a few steps away.
"Heyyyy big man, h-how are... how are you feeling?" He trips over his words, tongue heavy in his mouth with words unsaid, instead falling back on idle pleasantries.
"How do I feel, Tommy?" Wilbur does not turn to look at him, shoulders tensing, as a breathy, humourless laugh escapes him
"We gave up nearly everything to stand where we are right now, and you are asking me how I feel- I feel..."
"...Tommy is this what it's like to be a borrower?" He still does not move from his spot, ash drifting gently from his cigarette.
"-to feel so small?" Wilbur turns his head toward the stars, as if caught in a frightened realisation of just how insignificant he was in this world.
Tommy can't find the right words to say, so he says nothing. Instead he shrugs off his jacket and places it over Wilbur's shivering shoulders as he too gazes towards the stars. They stand next to each other in silence, the chill seeping into their bones.
"Hey, you see over there? Uhhhh... in the sky above the Carmavan-" Tommy points at a pair of stars brighter than all the others, drawing a horizontal line in the air between the two as he attempts to draw Wilbur's attention.
"People say that thats the eyes of Herobrine looking down at us- don't laugh!" Beside him, Wilbur is doubled over, peals of laughter ringing in Tommy's ears as a smile splits across his own face.
"No, no, seriously, listen Wil-" He is interrupted by his own burst of laughter, and waits until their chuckling quietens down a bit before continuing.
"... Phil used to tell me something else. That those stars were the eyes of a gigantic goddess looking down at us, and all the other stars are caught in her hair or some shit." Tommy stops for a moment, dramatics fading away from his tone as he drops his gaze down to look over L'manberg again.
"... I like that story. It's nice to think that in the bigger picture, humans are small too. Makes the difference feel less large."
Something in Wilbur loosens, the tightness in his jaw dissipating. The cigarette in his hands smoulders as the burning tip is pressed into the blackstone; the circular mark it leaves is one of many littering the surface of the wall.
"Thank you Tommy." His words are low and soft, but there is a small smile etched on Wilbur's lips.
The pair stay like that, warming each other with jokes and good company, watching as the dawn slips in and the skies turn ever onward.
