Mono Lake, formed at least 760,000 years ago is one of the oldest lakes in the western hemisphere. It is a welcome and vital oasis in the natural dry closed basin (695 square miles in size) of the eastern Sierra Nevada for millions of migratory and nesting birds. It's an immense inland sea with water that is so saline and alkaline that only brine shrimp can inhabit its waters.
