She saw him then, a warped image of a person consumed by black. His eyes are darker than most, but something burned within them when she wasn’t aware of it. His presence around her was like an afterimage. She could never feel or see him clearly when he was with her, but he could be felt wandering in the back of her mind when she didn’t want him to be there. But she was curious about him, curious of the man who stood for no one and everyone as if he held a weight on his bones no one else could pull away from him except for himself.
He was someone who didn’t belong in her world, someone who was beyond her grasp and that puzzled her. It confused her that no matter how much her mind told her to stay away that the drumming of his fingers against her mind made her want to stay. Just for a little bit at least. Just until she could figure out the man who was so bold and so blunt and whether the face he wore in front of her was real or not.
When he spoke, his voice was like the sound of waves crashing against the shore of some beach she never visited. His voice was low, inviting even, but she knew to not trust in it too much. She learned not to be hopeful when his voice no longer held bitterness behind them, but sometimes she would catch herself believing that this would be the end of the riddle she knew him to be. Sometime she let herself believe that he was letting her into his world, even for just a second.
“We are all liars. I am, and so are you.” She said after a beat, hair pushed back behind her shoulder. The rain grazed the window with a heavy hand, and she watched it fall rather than stare at him. She could never look at him for too long, too afraid that he would somehow figure out all that she tried to hide. She sighed then, hands in her lap as she tried to warm the coldness in them.
“But there is some truth in lies. There always is. I always believed in that. That sometimes lies tell what we want when the truth is too hard to say.” It was like reading between the lines of a lie, to decipher the truth that rang in the ends of lies. “Wouldn’t you say so? But you’re right in that sense, that lies are necessary when the truth bears too much weight.”

“Are you sure about this?” Oh, he wants to, he really does; the warmth of the running shower was inviting, as was the promise of Minho’s arms around him. But there was a looming anxiety, the uncertainty of being bare for the other to see and what he might think. He had never been naked in front of anyone before, but despite that, he knew he wanted it. Shifting a little on his feet, he reaches out to curl his fingers into Minho’s, swaying their fingers back and forth a few times. “It’ll be okay, right?”
WHO ARE YOU, GORERAVENS?
“Do you know how annoying you sound right now?”

“So Az, I hear you’ve got a boyfriend now. What’s that like?”The white-haired boy perks up from his spot on the couch, lifting his head for a moment to blink at the siren through the opening over his breakfast bar before he’s clearing his throat and sinking back down onto the cushions. A rogue flush tinges his cheeks, and he’s exhaling heavily, hands coming up to rub at his face. He blinks a few times at the ceiling, lips pursing some before he seems to deflate atop the cushions.
“Honestly, it’s a really weird feeling. Part of it doesn’t feel like anything’s changed, like it’s just kind of… remained the way it’s always been. Part of it doesn’t feel any different. I still feel like me, still like the same guy I was a few weeks ago. But then there’s like–… another part of me that feels almost… I don’t know what to call it.”
Jaebum interjects, a smile curved over his lips. “You feel whole?”
Az nods a little, exhaling a sheepish laugh. “Yeah, that– it’s like… complete. Like I feel human, and really… warm.” He sighs softly, his head giving a bit of a shake as he shifts on the couch and pushes himself into the corner of it completely, tugging the blanket off the back to pull it over his body instead – as always, colder than normal.
Jaebum clicks his tongue a little, watching the younger male make himself comfortable on the couch. A little laugh escapes the siren then, and he’s bringing over their drinks, handing Az the beer he’d asked for before plopping down upon the couch at the other end, facing him while he waits for Az to finish – because he can tell that the male is hardly done. It amuses him, the way he can almost see the gears turning in the blond’s head.
Az just smiles some, eyes cast down to his lap for the moment, fingers tugging at the frayed threads within the warm blanket, and he’s shaking his hair out a bit. “It’s… really crazy. I still feel really scared in a lot of ways– I’m afraid he’s gonna decide one day that I suck or somethin’.”
Jaebum laughs a little at that, but says nothing yet, simply letting him continue.
“But I don’t know… I feel right with him. It feels comfortable with him– like I can be myself in every way and he’s not going to judge me. And it feels… so genuine with him. Like it– it doesn’t feel like he’s doing this just because, or on a whim or what-have-you. It feels honest.” He smiles then, fingers curling up in his cover before he’s exhaling a wispy sigh, eyes fluttering shut. “I can still feel his lips on mine– isn’t that funny? It’s like he’s still here, wrapped around me. It just feels so right. I know… that I’m young, but I just– He makes me feel so many things, and every time I’m with him it just feels… perfect. I feel happy. Not the kind of happy you feel when you get something you want, but the kind of happy you feel when you’re at peace. The kind of happiness you feel when you’re at home, and everything just feels right.”
He pauses, exhaling a soft sigh, brows knitting together before he inhales again, deeply, to calm his urge to cry. He’s never felt so incredibly emotional before, especially never towards someone else, but talking about it makes his chest ache in all the goo kind of ways.
“He feels like home. We could be sleeping in a park, no blankets, no food, no money–… as long as I’m in his arms, it doesn’t matter. It just… God, it sounds so lovesick and gross, and I must sound like such a hypocrite, but fuck, ‘bum– It’s not even about looks either. EJ asked me if it was, but it isn’t. I mean, he’s handsome – god, he’s fucking handsome – but it’s not even that at all. He just makes me feel so good.”
Another laugh leaves the siren, but it’s softer, and he nods his head a few times, a low hum of thought then following the sound before he takes a sip of his drink. He watches the way Az smiles, a sight uncommon for the white-haired boy.
“Do you think you love him?”
There’s a shake of his head, but it’s not immediate, and then shoulders lift in a bit of a shrug.
“I’m barely even figuring out what this feels like itself, so I honestly don’t know. It could be, but… I really don’t know. I just know that it feels right.”

Summer evenings catch Seoul at the beginning of her dance, fingertips reaching for the sky and toes leaping from the earth. Her gown of coral and marigold glimmers with scintillations of stars between her seams, glittering with every twirl and bound that sends her skirt billowing in the breeze. Specks of vermilion and indigo mottle the hem of her skirt, fusing in fleeting flashes of fuchsia when she sweeps her feet across the ground, heels clicking to a lively rhythm. Her citizens awaken from their their nests of cubicles and spreadsheets to join her in the dance, clapping in unison and swaying to the beat. A lithe step-ball-change sends a ripple through the stitches of her dress, showers the streets with merriment and invites her citizens to take her hand with charming smiles and radiant eyes.
Following the ebb of traffic, a boy of bones and apprehension-meets-curiosity is swept into one of the thousands of narrow alleys between main streets, establishments crammed together and all hollering for the wallets of passersby. The thick aroma of pork belly on a grill clashes against the spices of chicken curry from an immigrant Indian’s tiny restaurant with standing room only, then melds with a striking waft of candy floss that blooms from a cart down the street, buzzing and whirring with centrifugal cogs. Soon, the stench of stagnant water and brine shrimp clings to the boy’s nose and beckons him closer, knobby fingers curling: come hither, come hither.
Hands in pockets, he pauses to inspect the towering shelves of tanks, each one topped with a plastic bag half full of water and tiny, shimmering fish. To acclimate the fish to the tank’s temperature, he hears the elderly owner tell a potential customer, hands folded behind a hunched back. In spite of the various handwritten signs declaring DO NOT TAP THE GLASS, Kyungsoo leans forward, gaze inquisitive, and prods at the barrier between himself and the wide-eyed fishes bumbling about. He swears one of them looks at him, so he taps the glass once again, lips curling into a timid smile. This time, the fish jolts and scurries away, diaphanous fins swaying to and fro in elegant rejection, and with a slump of his shoulders, the boy returns his hand to his pocket and skitters off, mouth drawn into something just short of a pout. The city twists; her citizens shout. A trumpet sounds, erupting raucous applause, and neon lights twinkle unabashedly as dusk descends upon Seoul.
He should have read the signs more closely.
