backwoods stories
It’s noteworthy that the title I assigned to one of my early molit type of works was “Will God forgive us for what we’re doing?” It was an exploration of His presence during postcoital contemplation that doesn’t turn the way one of the participants would like it to go in the afterglow.
Noteworthy because only now, nearly 20 years later, am I weighing the unconscious influence of all of that youthful religion fed to me in turbulent times. For that matter, experiences as recent as sitting in a church alongside my brother during a thunderstorm over the lands where native slaves were forced to convert to Catholicism and labor for Spanish silver barons, or my final moments with my grandmother before she died being a holy blessing from her upon my forehead.
I wonder, thinking back on that story, how much of that came to bear in how I was as a real person in those relationships. It was never overtly held against me but then my density is well-established. Perhaps I simply missed the telegram.
I would never turn back to the church in a serious way, but its culture is woven in so deeply that I’d likely be undone in any effort to remove it. I’ll continue to walk by churches and feel that I can step in there any time I like to light a candle, sit at the pew, and convince myself that I am penitent about nothing. What He thinks is of no consequence.
Wow relatable cool
