Ok question for the professionals in this field:
Tell me the difference between emos and goths. I'm genually very curious as to how they differ.
Find out what's the difference between Goth and Emo including Gothic vs Emo style, sound and philosophy,
Goth v. Emo: A (moody) discussion
https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/1xena9/what_is_the_difference_between_a_goth_and_emo/cfaroas/I’ve been asked this recently on a number of occasions. I won’t lie, sometimes it really irks me when people confuse the aesthetics and music, therefore just lumping them into the “goth” category. Because I feel very confident that I can see/hear/understand the difference and I don’t understand why people can’t.
However, I realize then when asked to articulate why they’re different, I struggle to do so without being so blatantly offended by being associated with the “scene” genre (I know, I know...I should be better than this). So I found myself doing some research into the actual, legitimate difference. Facts, information, and references that legitimately and logically separate the two genres more so that a pathetic response of, “emo music is just crap.” You can’t provide a definition with opinion based statement.
Anyways, I found this response on reddit explaining the difference between goth and emo.
“Goth culture is rooted in Goth music from the 80's which was a particularly atmospheric, cold, and nihilistic sort of post-punk like Bauhaus or early Cure. Emo culture has roots in Emo music starting in the 1990s with a confessional style of melodic hardcore punk based more in direct melodies and personal issues than any sort of grand societal statement i.e. Sunny Day Real Estate, Jimmy Eat World. Both are based in punk and depression, but goth has more of a societal doom kick to it where emo is more introspection and whine.”
Make sense? Anyone who is into these genres have a different opinion? I think it’s important to be objective - not just in music, but in life - when trying to understand the difference in interests and the way people appreciate the world around them.
GOTHPROBLEM
me: I wanna keep my sideburns when I'm doing my sidecut.
little sister: absolutely NO, nonononoo no, you'll end up looking like a EMO.
me: HEY! Many in the goth subculture got it!
little sister: Well, they're emos
me: no they're goths
little sister: well that's the SAME THING.
Me: Oh you so did not say that!!!
*after a long discussion of the difference*
Me: Mooooom, she (lil' sister) called me EMO though I'm goth.
Mom: Well, what's the difference?
*The world's falling apart*
