02/09/16: Day Thirty Five of Work Placement

I’m back again already! For those of you who missed my previous posts, I’m Helen and I’m working here at Attenborough Arts Centre (AAC) for 8 weeks as part of MA Art Museum and Gallery Studies at the University of Leicester. This week brings a lot of blogging to create content for the next few exhibitions.

Award for task of the week: I took minutes at an exhibition development meeting with three artists who will be showing work in the gallery next year. It provided me with a great insight into exhibition development and how to create a solid proposal. A lot of behind the scenes work goes into curating an exhibition and this is my first real insight as to what happens in the planning stage.

Unfortunately we have stopped placing Pokémon Go lures in AAC as the trial period has ended. Regardless, a few Pokémon have reared their head again this week in the gallery.

26/08/16: Day Thirty of Work Placement

I’m back again already! For those of you who missed my previous posts, I’m Helen and I’m working here at Attenborough Arts Centre (AAC) for 8 weeks as part of MA Art Museum and Gallery Studies at the University of Leicester. This week brings a lot of blogging to create content for the next few exhibitions.

Award for task of the week: I was given the task of transcribing an interview to turn it into a blog post for the current exhibition. Previously I have transcribed four interviews for my Masters dissertation so I am now used to this type of work and having to listen carefully to what the interviewee is saying, but it was fun to listen to the Visual Art Officer’s ideas and inspirations for our current exhibition Plant Culture (free entry, open 7 days a week, running until 25th September).

Unfortunately we have stopped placing Pokémon Go lures in AAC as the trial period has ended. Regardless, a few Pokémon have reared their head this week in the gallery.

19/08/16: Day Twenty Five of Work Placement

I’m back again already! For those of you who missed my previous posts, I’m Helen and I’m working here at Attenborough Arts Centre (AAC) for 8 weeks as part of MA Art Museum and Gallery Studies at the University of Leicester. This week brings more children, more photography and my first full week not being ill. Woo!

Award for task of the week: I am currently researching for an exhibition about a punk rock singer and artist (Ian Dury). I find the punk era fascinating as it is, but part of this research included watching the DVD Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll (2010). Watching a DVD in work hours! This task was great fun indeed and a really interesting film about Dury’s life.

Unfortunately we will be stopping placing lures in AAC soon as the trial period comes to an end. We had at least 21 people come over the month for Pokemon Go and claim their free pencil though so that’s been a positive.

12/08/16: Day Twenty of Work Placement

I’m back again already! For those of you who missed my previous posts, I’m Helen and I’m working here at Attenborough Arts Centre (AAC) for 8 weeks as part of MA Art Museum and Gallery Studies at the University of Leicester. This week brings a lot of children and an in-depth conversation with a 4-year-old about which character is best: Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. I voted for Tails because they can fly and also help their friend Sonic out. The kid chose Shadow, which I felt was unfair because that was not one of the options!

Award for task of the week: I was allowed to shadow an outreach theatre performance by Bamboozle (called The Cherished Isle) as part of the Children in Need project. It was a session for children with Autism and I became the event photographer! I really enjoy taking photos and would love to develop my amateur photography when I have more time. However, the sensory performance had very low lighting which meant deleting a lot of the photos that had blurred or were too dark. The flash made people too shiny and was quite distracting, so it was a process of elimination for the photos without flash.

One of the children took a liking to the Pokémon sign in our foyer, but did not understand the app or the concept of Pokémon Go being augmented reality. It is quite good fun to turn on the AR feature and seeing the critters on the artwork in the gallery.
