what is your favorite part of world building? What elements of making a universe from scratch do you find yourself enjoying the most?

honestly...

"fixing" stuff from the world i do live in. at first when you build up a new universe it can seem like you're making it too "perfect". you're eliminating the awful parts of the world. the racism, the homophobia, the *everything*.

to do that effectively, you have to create a whole different society. you have to think of the morals, the mores of the people in that world. what guides their opinions? what do they find deplorable? what do they not care about? what do they value? Luka wouldn't understand homophobia on a conceptual level. he would be viscerally offended at the idea of a funeral.

for a while, yeah. i was making a "too good" version of the world. it is a little too polished, too clean. and that's actually okay to do, by the way. you can make a fictional world devoid of the evil of your own and be satisfied, but alas. i'm not.

i feel like to make a rounded world you have to give the people in it different values. the people of the graces universe share a lot of our own values, but there's a lot of gaps. a lot of things they don't do, won't do, don't care about that we might.

Tychon Whitfrost's university level professorship has a field research component, but the research aspect of it is little more than looking at historical gravesites and graverobbing. the value of ancient history is *not something that modern people have*, because ANCIENT ancient history has no actual connection to their own lives. that was a different generation of sapient people, and there is no *blood connection*.

you have to give the societies flaws and values. beliefs that are often incongruous to what they *should* be. societies aren't neat and pretty and making sure they have a good blend of "good", "bad", "weird" and "nonsense" kinds of beliefs makes them real.

another thing i really enjoy is developing the tech level. how advanced are they in comparison to us? why? with the inclusion of magic, how did that stray their "technology" from ours? in universe, the idea of preserving antiquity, specifically from past generations of people, is new. it will be something Tychon eventually helps develop as he gets older.

graces verse has no true cars but they do have magic ports that allow for travel between cities hundreds of miles apart - though, the ports take a lot of energy and they haven't quite figured out how to have them run 24/7, so now they run on a schedule almost like a bus route because technologically speaking, that's where they are.

Perrin Whitfrost is a baker! he's got a passion for making unique baked goods. while his wife is in labor (a bit sooner than expected) he's busy working. he manages to make it to the birth of his first and only child just in time.
