Posted @withregram • @motilton Dispersed camping has been surging across the West from Moab to Sedona to Crested Butte, where I live, as well as in the San Juan Mountains, where I grew up. This trend was in motion pre-pandemic but spiked this year alongside the growth of outdoor recreation, following record product sales and busier-than-ever trailheads. And, understandably so, given that it costs nothing and allows outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy public lands plus it’s such a healthy pastime. But dispersed camping has rules and limitations. The recreationists who live closest to and most frequently steward those public lands are able to see (and often clean up) the impact of that growing ring of users, especially this year. When occupancy overflows in traditional dispersed camping spots, campers often create sites close to water or in undisturbed areas like wildflower meadows, which is illegal (you read that correctly—it’s not solely a Leave No Trace principle. Its federal law.) Campers can receive citations—for hundreds to thousands of dollars—or areas can eliminate dispersed camping altogether. That latter has become the best option for land management here in the Crested Butte-Gunnison Valley, which will roll out over the next few years, as we switch to designated camp spots. Friends, it’s so crucial to understand what dispersed camping entails and how to do it properly. Read my latest guide, “‘Dispersed Camping’: How to Car Camp on Public Land,” published by Gear Junkie (@thegearjunkie) for tips and guidelines on how to enjoy dispersed camping and maintain the ethics that will keep it a sustainable pastime for others to enjoy. Furthermore, being a good ‘dispersed camper’ means we’re preserving our outdoor spaces, which hold inherent value from scenic awe to wildlife habitat and natural resources—and the lattermost affects our survival, quality of life, as well as our economy.
