Most people know the difference between good and bad, although it’s not always black and white, we have some sort of notification system in our head because it’s so engrained in us. It’s just often times we choose to ignore it. But as Christians that should be a given. So what happens when something isn’t necessarily bad, but you get a bunch of good choices and you have to pick the best one? What happens when it’s good vs good?
In high school we had this history teacher, who I would say was interesting to say the least. He wore a fanny pack, carried knives, and had the chest hair of a werewolf. He almost always wore flannel with a vest and you could probably find every article of clothing he owned at REI. But he also graduated from Columbia University and if I remember correctly, was at some point a lawyer… I think. In any case, although he was a bit peculiar, he was probably brilliant. More so than any other teacher I’ve met. And as much as I respected him, I very much despised his teaching methods.
As someone who normally gets by by absorbing the information during lecture and rarely studies the information in a textbook, I freaking hated this man. His tests were always entirely multiple choice and always taken on a scantron sheet. You might be thinking that multiple choice would be easier, but NOPE, it wasn’t. It was like the question read,
a. blood
b. an apple
c. a firetruck
d. a ruby
and you had to pick the answer from that… like *jackie chan what? meme*
Just like multiple choice questions that we once considered to be easy become more difficult, the decisions we make as Christians also becomes more difficult. We should no longer choose between drinking and not drinking, or smoking and not smoking. We should be wondering if we should spend that extra time getting that six pack or using that time to study God’s word. We should be deciding whether to watch the football game with our friends or go to bible study. And I’m not saying that being physically fit or hanging out with friends is bad, it's just essentially, it boils down to how our time could be best spent to bring not only ourselves closer to God, but also how we could best bring other people closer to God. What is most important to you? Because that answer, is your god… or God.
