Based on the presence of the Grapeman at the opening ceremony, it is fair to assume that Elizabeth Welch was nearby. One might even deduce that she was the mysterious hooded/masked figure bearing the torch aloft. Think about it: not only was the grapeman present, but the torchbearer was also masked, which is an obvious nod to Phantom of the Opera, and the masked figure also performed a brief table dance, which as we all know Christine does in the restaged version.
All of this sounds completely reasonable, I completely agree with this theory.
