But hey, let’s talk graphics.
My designer and friend (same person) made this for you:
She and I are of a similar mind in that we lean toward minimal graphic requirements. In fact, you’ll find I lean toward minimal requirements in general. The goal is to make Kaleidoscope World accessible and easy for everyone, especially on the graphics/profile front! So, specifically: two graphics.
Avatars on Kaleidoscope World should be 250 x 450. Profile images should be 450 x 600.
That said, my designer suggests doubling the size when possible (500 x 900; 900 x 1200) if you want to optimize your visuals for increasingly common high-quality “retina displays.”

In the coming days, we’ll be sure to get you a peek at our out-of-character and in-character profiles and mini-profiles; we’re working on preparing those previews as we speak. In the meantime, I’m more than happy to give you a quick rundown of the application process, which can probably be best summed up with our favorite phrase for today: minimal requirements. Kaleidoscope World will be using short profile apps with a few quick and easy required fields as well as optional fields where you can expand on your character’s biography if you wish. Required fields include your character’s name, pronouns, age, lifeform type, title, a brief intro or summary (if human) or a brief overview of their true identity (if alien), and three fun facts in the form of bullets! Because I love bullets.
Once these fields are complete, writers can submit their character and face claim (if applicable) to be sorted into their member group and added to the directory. Easy peasy! I consider character profiles to be a living document, and I’ll be encouraging writers to go back and add, remove, or edit their cast’s outlines as they see fit. I’ve tried to build the profiles in such a way that they’re easy to fill out and can function as more of a teaser than a tell-all. I think character bios are best when they interest their own writer as well as their readers—and perhaps leave a story to be told. For writers more comfortable with more detail though, there’s definitely space for optional histories and descriptions as well. And of course, they can also go into more detail in their plotter if they want.
Also, there will be no word count requirements for profiles—or for anywhere else on the site, for that matter.
