Coloring PSD used for the preview was created by @wasirauhlpsds and can be found here (not included in download, please note that PSD was edited for the preview).
Customization should be relatively painless, just make sure you know how to edit hue/saturation layers to edit colors, layer masks, and solid color layers. If you run into any problems, let me know and I’ll do my best to help you out!
NOTE: This is not recommended for large group rps, rather personal edits for your characters or for characters in a small group rps, otherwise customizing the edit for each character may become too time consuming.

Okay so this tutorial is mostly for slightly above basic photoshop kids. You don’t really need to be intermediate or better, you just need to know your basics like how to use the rectangle tool [just to change the colors, not to make new shapes] and how to use clipping masks.
So first off, I’m going to talk about all of the layers and what they do.
We have three basic groups
the text
the left side
the right side
[and the coloring, but we’ll talk about that later]
If you open up the text group, you see these two layers
This is where you change the text using the text tool. The font that’s used for the Character Name is Courier New, which should already be installed on your computer, but I suggest using other fonts as well such as Streetscript [used above] or any of the other fonts you can use on the Tumblr mobile appearance thingie this is based on.
Now if you open the left group, you have more groups for the Icon, top background, bottom squares, and the base.
Here’s a diagram of which group affects what on the graphic,
To change the icon, all you have to do is insert your image [64x64] where the layer “Layer 11” is and make sure the clipping mask stays in tact. From there you can decide whether or not you want to use the gradient to make it black and white.
To change the top background, you can choose from the layers already provided or do the same as above and insert a new image [at least 245x140] and make sure to use a clipping mask so it stays in place.
And it’s the same with the bottom squares which should be 72x72
Now for the right side which is way easier.
If you have an image with a dark background, use the white lines instead of the black lines and if you have a light background, use the black lines.
Insert your images where mine is [which is labelled Curves 1] and you’re done. Now I do recommend using the gradient map here so that the lines show up more easily, but again, it’s up to you.
Now for the part that could seem a tad confusing. If you want to change the background color of the left side, all you have to do is click on the layer named “left base,” then click on this little square
Easy, right? Oh but wait, now our background is one color, but the outline on the icon is another. That sucks, amiright? Okay so because we want those to match, now we’re going to go back to the icon layer and change the color of the outline. But we have to make sure that we click on the ellipse tool first. Then, go to the top where there’s a bar to change the color. Select the color for the stroke and match it to your new background color. [Click the image for full size]
Now you may think we’re done now, and hey, we could be if you wanted to be, but some people like putting PSDs on their character graphics, just to make sure they have a nice coloring. Now on this PSD, you might only want to color certain parts like the icon, background, squares, and right side. So because it would be hard to make sure that the right parts got colored, I made you guys a layer mask! A layer mask hides certain parts of a layer you don’t want to be shown, so if you just drag the layer mask from the very first layer titled coloring to your own PSD group, it should color the images perfectly. [Also remember to delete the layer labeled coloring afterwards so that it’s just your PSD coloring the image]
And I think that’s about it. Let me know if you need any more help or if I can be more clear or do an actual demo. I hope this helped! C:
