With GratNin I’ve been looking at what Sanpei Shirato (The Legend of Kamui) did with the genre. Thinking about what he said about contemporary life with the ninja genre vs. what Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) has said; playing with the tropes in both those and other ninja stories. I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to try and make a new work in the tradition of Sanpei Shirato’s work while remaining true to my personal experience.How much do I want to flirt with pastiche?”

In cities, trends come, go, and come again; causes rise to prominence, fall by the wayside, and emerge repackaged; neighborhoods flourish or fall out of favor. Condos, cupcake shops, and bike lanes become signifiers; shady buyouts and racist landlords fuel arguments about whether communities are being renewed or decimated.
Working on the book, was there something that stood out as having a big impact on you?
There’s a guy named Jerry the Peddler who’s been squatting on the Lower East Side since 1975. He was involved in the Tompkins Square Riots of 1988. He really got my wheels turning about the prevailing perspective that guides a lot of cities right now—that land is to be capitalized.
How else can it be viewed?
Land doesn’t have to be commodified. It can simply be a place where you lay your head, where you work, grow food, gather in a park. I realize that’s utopic. But it deserves to be part of the conversation. Our vision is narrowed by primarily thinking of land as property. Why can’t we think about it more as a community resource, something that can be handled through things like land trusts? There are different models in addition to simply buying and selling homes and shops.

CA: Just from the title alone, it's Obvious That GratNin HAS Reviews some of ict roots in Japanese culture. From one black nerd into Japan's history and culture to Reviews another - in 6th grade, a friend slow me some Sailor Moon manga and I never Looked back - how Did That interest start? Have Any Of Those early influences Made Their Way into GratNin?
RW: Hahaha, I do not Identify as a nerd. My interest in history or cultural Any Particular Does not inform my identity To That degree. I just-have interests. I travel. I read. I research my work. I wrote an essay about it.
I Grew up watching Japanese animation, Japanese playing games, etc. etc. Just like everybody else Nearly, so it's on my palette. It's not exceptional.
GratNin is squarely rooted in American culture. HAS American Culture Japanese Culture in it; this is what is GratNin, it's down to lens (my lens) is Japanese culture. Ict at root, is about American GratNin issues of community, urban planning, the Prison industrial complex, cultural appropriation, commodification and cultural identity framed in the language of shoujo, shounen, seinen, and gekiga.
Some Japanese influences That-have made it into GratNin are Yuri Kochiyama; I Was inspired by historical figures like Noe Ito, Hiratsuka Raichou Seito and the group; formalistically, I am studying / contrasting the ninja genre works of Masashi Kishimoto and Shirato Sampei.
