They were silent as they moved. And if he hadn’t caught sight of them, they might’ve snuck up on the pair unaware. There were two of them, fresh enough to be newly dead. One had gaping hole in his cheek, jagged around the edges and exposing a set of gleaming white chompers. Torn flesh hung like streamers from where his eye socket used to be; but none of that seemed to hinder its movements. The other, Grayson couldn’t find a a single scratch or bite mark on them at first glance. Only their shambling movements, and dull-eyed gaze clued him into what they truly were.
Moving fast, Grayson shoved his prisoner behind him, uncaring where his hands landed on her body or if she fell over in his haste. Hands bond tightly in front of her, the building they were holed up in surrounded by a heard of the dead at least a hundred deep, she wasn’t going anywhere. Not if she knew what was best for her. Newly dead meant that they moved faster, their reflexes almost human quick. Gun would be easier, but he didn’t want to attract unnecessary attention. The knife would have to do.
Ducking beneath clawed hands, grasping at air and hungry for living flesh, Grayson slipped his blade free from it’s holster in one smooth move and embedded it deep in the base of the creature’s skull. Perfect kill. Congealed blood seeped from the wound he’d created, coating his hand in a cool, visceral gunk. The other one ignored Grayson in favor of the helpless female. It ambled after her, teeth gnashing at the air, sending flecks of spittle and unidentified chunks in her directed. Grayson pulled his knife free from the first biter, before quickly going after the second. This one he caught in the side of it’s head ---it’s jaw stilled mid gape. He kicked the body to the ground, wiping his blade clean on the side of his jeans before turning to the girl. “Get up. We need to move before more come.”
