Been to Santorini 6 years in a row (and how I never get tired of it)!
We all have a favorite place to go or we end up picking a favorite one among the ones we have travelled. I live in Greece and my origin is from Santorini. This means that my family has a special connection with this island and it has become our must destination the past years. I’ve been to plenty of islands in the past, from Skyros,Andros and Crete to Kythnos, Alonissos and Kos (we went to Kos last year and it was beautiful..may I say: divine food!!). The last 6 years I’ve been to Santorini for summer vacations and I must say I have now linked summer to Santorini.
I have to clarify that I haven’t stopped going to other islands, I love Greece and its natural beauty and I’m eager to travel all of it and the places I haven’t still visited. You realise that there’s a family connection and that is why we consider it as home. Santorini is a heaven on earth. Many might say I praise it because of the love I have for it, but many can assure you that this is the objective truth. People from all over the world come to visit this island on vacations, on honeymoon, to get married, to make a dream come true. It is known for its spectacular views and the unique sunset. Objectively, Santorini is not known for its beaches, that is, they are morphologically interesting because of the black volcanic sand and their depth (however not all the beaches are like that), but they are not famous for crystal green waters such as the waters in Milos (that’s just an example). The beaches have a more wild beauty.
However, this is just a drop in the ocean. The caldera view is the main reason people travel from all over the world. I can only describe it with one word: breathtaking! It is an essential experience !The caldera view towns are : Fira, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Oia. Santorini Caldera is the crater sunk into the sea 1645 years BC, destroying the Minoan civilization. Volcanic eruptions and later earthquakes have formed the final morphology of Santorini. The white-washed houses on top are mostly caves that were not used as houses 200 or 400 years ago but some as wine cellars. So, the altitude of the caldera and the infinite sea combined with the extraordinary view of Palia and Nea Kameni (two volcanic islands on the centre of caldera) , thrill thousands of tourists every year.
This is a main reason why I’m not bored. Believe it or not I still get the chills every time I look at this view and every time it feels like the first one. It is no coincidence that every year is the number one travel destination internationally. This island has a positive vibe, a wild beauty, it brings a balance. Either you are a party animal or a loner, Santorini can offer both. Entertainment in the bars and clubs of the towns and peace of mind just a kilometer outside the towns. Oia is the ideal place to watch the sunset and take lots of pictures (it is extremely famous for it), but for those who seek silence, a walk to Imerovigli or Firostefani can also trigger all your senses and offer great stops to watch the sunset.
If you want to buy souvenirs and local products to your way home (and you will), don’t forget to buy local cherry tomatoes and the well known Santorini Vinsanto, a very tasty wine. (There are also many other local wines with exquisite taste). Donkeys are the mascot of the island and you can buy dolls, key rings, mugs and everything related to the greek donkey. Last, traditional Fava of Santorini will be served as the perfect starter (or main course ) on your table.
I browse this years photos and I feel again the urge to go back and never return. Do you ever feel that a place can be your soul place? Is there a destination you want to return to every year? I found mine. In the beautiful chaos of traveling experiences I hope to find many more and always return to them.
