Marya's Favorite Fifteen Films of 2024
Favourite first watches in September 2025
Had a very good cinema month. Watching a lot of recent gems but also some older ones. A mix of harrowing and feel good films. Mostly from around the world.
And can you believe this year my country has not one but two quite good feature films that actually talk about a contemporary topic as well as a queer documentary we're sending for the oscars. Like is this a new rise of czech cinema? I sure hope so.
No going back now. Went back to the green hell of the Belarus/Poland border to support my crew tryna keep refugees alive on their journey w medical needs, food, clothing, phone access, cigarettes, asylum papers, whatever. To avoid detection we navigate in total darkness but sometimes at night we'll risk a red light like a campfire that gives no heat. I'll try to get stories when/how I can around the glow while the medics tend to razor wire injuries or dog bites or whatever wounds these rival states have inflicted. Borders are death, I don't trust myself with a proper description but they are bad. fuck them and fuck the cowards maintaining them.
Green Border (2023), directed by Agnieszka Holland
"Mr. Kaczyński said that Americans lost the war in Vietnam because they allowed the media to go there.[...] So Mr. Kaczyński said "Okay, okay, so no press, no media, nothing. We can do whatever we want and there will be no traces. [...] And I said, they don't want the images? I will make the images." (x)
Zielona granica | Green Border (2024) dir. Agnieszka Holland cine. Tomasz Naumiuk
Ivan's Childhood (Andrei Tarkovsky) vs Green Border (Agnieszka Holland)
not sure if the Tarkovsky scene was an inspiration, but there is an eery resemblence considering the subject and context of both films and the particular scenes having a powerful impact on the viewer
