'RON97 more comfortable for long distance travel'
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19, 2014:
Following the drop in Malaysia’s oil prices, many users are becoming comfortable with using RON97, especially for long distance travel.
With only a 20 sen price difference, most of them have been able to enjoy the better and smoother performance provided by the “expensive fuel”.
To Rozana Abd Rashid, 41, who is a full-time homemaker, she can now refuel from the green pump if driving over long distances, such as outside of Kuala Lumpur.
“Before, I did not use RON97, first of all because the price is more expensive, but I admit that the (current) price now allows me to fill up with this fuel.
“The difference is only about 20 sen. But for short distance travel, I still use RON95,” she told The Rakyat Post.
Among others who shared the same view was lecturer Ezzat Fahmi Ahmad, 28, who felt that the performance of RON97 was more reassuring.
The fuel was also said to give more mileage than RON95, which is now priced at RM2.26 per liter.
“I use the green pump fuel if I drive long distance because it gives a smoother drive and better mileage.
“I do not care if I switch between fuels because the price difference is not much. But I used to fill up with RON95 because it was much cheaper,” he said.
Things were different for Al Wafi Ali, 29, an employee in the private sector who said he was sticking with RON95 out of habit.
However, he did not discount the possibility of switching to RON97, which is more affordable now.
“I have been using RON95 since 2004. During the decline in oil prices recently, I also thought of changing because the price difference between RON95 and RON97 is only RM0.20.
“After all, RON97 is of better quality compared to RON95 and is better for the engine. I may soon switch over to RON97,” he said.
For motorcyclists like Azli Ahmad Poot, 28, he is more comfortable using RON97 also because of the better performance factor.
The small difference in price is not a burden in using the much better quality fuel.
“I do not mind using either because my father said the two fuels are good. So, if my motorcycle is parked close to the green pump, I fill from the green pump. If it is close to the yellow, I fill from the yellow pump,” said Siti Salwa Darwis, 20, a student of an institution of higher learning.
The government is expected to announce on Dec 31 the new price of RON95 and RON97 petrol at a lower rate due to the fall in global oil prices.
Deputy Finance Minister 1 Datuk Ahmad Maslan said yesterday that the rate of RON95 and RON97 could not be released now as the government was still studying it.
