C15 GB Custom Decktech

So, over the break I got my hands on the GB Commander 2015 deck. I muddled over what I wanted to do with it and decided to pull it apart and make two decks out of it: one for each of the original deck’s themes. So far, here’s what I think;

Meren Self-Mill and Reanimation: Its fun. Putting some stupid big creature from your grave onto the battlefield every turn is just great. I found that I put in too few creatures that milled me as an etb effect in favor of creatures that doubled as removal. Additionally, cheap sac outlets are a must include as it can be pretty tough getting the experience counters that you need. Meren is a HUGE target IMO so having ways to keep her alive would be a good idea, but I haven’t included many in my deck. Some hexproof granting equipment should probably do just fine. Board wipes aren’t a big problem since its not to hard to rebuild. In testing I find this deck a bit slow and if I don’t draw cards to mill myself, ill end up having turns where Meren’s effect doesn’t do anything, which is bad. When Meren is on the field, you want to be making use of her ability. Overall, the current state of this deck needs some work, but I should have the cards kicking around back home.

Mazirek Sacrifice and Tokens: This is my favourite deck of the two, and currently my favourite deck that I currently have constructed. The pre-con came with a handful of good sac outlets and I had a pool of cards that just benefited from stuff dieing. Having cheap-spammable sac outlets is a must here: you don’t need the outlet to give you much; you just want the bonus from Mazirek. Token generators are so key to this strategy; unfortunately, GB doesn’t have a lot of options for mass-producing tokens quickly. Luckily, the pre-con comes with a few that definitely help with the deck. Eldrazi Scions synergize extremely well with this strategy: providing the necessary ramp and are still useful late game when you don’t need the mana. In testing: the setup can be a bit rough, and your low end creatures are pretty weak, but once you get some tokens and Mazirek out, you should be able to beef up real quick. Mazirek is also a big target here, since his ability is so key to the strategy. There are a couple bombshell plays but Mazirek just naturally lends himself so easily to every card in the deck. I definitely can’t wait to try this one out in a good game of EDH.
