Mei-Rin could not say why her mother had to get married again. She could remember her father: a terrible, cruel man who would hit both of them just because he could. Now, all of that would happen again.

And yet, there was nothing she could do; after the wedding, the new part of the family moved in. And that was when she first learnt that the new father had a son.

“I am not sharing my room with you,” she said immediately to her new brother, tipping her chin slightly up. Although she was already finishing her school, she was still childish like this, especially in moments of strong feelings. Now, she felt endangered.

“But it’s not the only reason!” Mei-Rin blushed deeply. She was just trying to collect the books from the desk in the empty classroom when Cayden approached her and began this uncomfortable conversation. “It’s simply wrong, alright? I am not going to risk the future of either of us... and don’t even try to convince me.”

Mei-Rin was not really happy to attend that big party, but because of the fact that her parents’ company had just managed to finish some difficult transaction, and because of the great anniversary, she knew she had to come. At least to make her parents happy.

With a sigh, she reached for a glass of wine one of the waiters offered to her. Truth be told, she was not sure why she had accepted it; she didn’t really like drinking.

Letting her parents talk to some of their friends, and not really being interested in listening to their conversation about children, she stepped away, mixing amongst all of the people there, hoping no-one would pay any attention to her just walking and looking around.

It was just a dare: to get into an old manor, which was considered to be haunted. And how was Rachel supposed to refuse it? To stain her honour? No. Never.

Athough she had claimed before that she had not been afraid, that such things as ghosts had not existed, now, when she was left all alone, locked in the great house, she felt a cold shiver go down her spine. And what if there actually was something inside…?

Sometimes her imagination made it all worse; and apparently it was this time, because when she began climbing upstairs, she would have sworn she could see a silhouette of a grown-up man.

“Stop joking. It’s not funny,” she said out loud, sure it was one of her friends’ friends who was supposed to scare her.

It was just an autumn day. Cloudy and wet, nothing really special. After all, it was already October, and it would be pretty strange if the weather was different. Nothing showed it would be a day other than any other.

Nothing.

And yet... Mei-Rin frowned slightly, seeing the drops on her glasses and wiped them away with her sleeve when she heard a strange thud not far away from where she stood.

Without a moment of hesitation, she ran in the right direction and knelt next to something that looked like a dead body. And yet, it was not a body, and Mei-Rin could see that. There was no blood, and the person’s chest moved slowly in the rhythm of their breath.

But what surprised her most was the pair of enormous wings growing from their back. One of them was broken, and although it was like a dream, she understood what had happened.

“Are you... alright?” she whispered only.

Remi absently kicked the leaves as she walked to school, a small pout on her face as she wrapped her scarf tighter around her neck. She was lonely, and hadn't seen Frank in a while. And a new school year had just started too.

It felt like mistakes were made more often than Frank could deal with. Because of the trouble he’d gotten into with the underground market, he had even skipped the first days of the school year.

He finally dragged his feet along towards school, figuring that he couldn’t avoid it anymore. There was someone he’d been wanting to see there anyway.

And sure enough, as he was busy looking at the ground, he bumped into exactly that person.

“Oh, sorr……. Huh? R-Remi!!”
