Greg Breda -- Salt
While observing reconstruction and depression era photographs, I started to note a continence of grace, dignity, and strength that many of the people possessed. I found myself thinking about how does one come out of slavery with their right mind. How does someone who had almost nothing, while being faced with unemployment, evictions from sharecropping farms, poor education, if education was available at all, harassment, violence, disrespect and injustices at every turn, while witnessing the terror inflected on your people still have the beauty of peace and self-respect in their expressions? How does someone who was last in every line, still have hope in his or her eyes for a brighter tomorrow? My conclusion is Salt.
Salt has natural properties used for purification, preservation, and beneficial nutrients to sustain life. These properties are easily adapted as metaphor in spiritual identity. Salt is that inner strength. Salt is that Spirit of Peace, Light, and Love, that is able to hold one in his right mind, and cause her to forgive injustices, and allow them to believe in brighter days to come. Making those of the past the salt of the earth who had not lost their savor.
