Rosanne Cash Narrates “Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad Today”

- Documentary premieres June 25 in Oklahoma on way to PBS broadcast

Rosanne Cash narrates the story of Woody Guthrie and John Steinbeck and the intersection of their lives and missions in “Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad Today.”

The documentary, written and directed by Greg Mitchell, will have its world-premiere June 25 in Tulsa, Okla.

Built around “little-seen” video footage and more-familiar photographs and soundtracked with a dozen Guthrie numbers, plus the titular Bruce Springsteen song, the film “explores for the first time the conditions and chain of events that brought (Guthrie and Steinbeck) together in California starting in 1938,” per a news release.

The premiere - ticketing info here - will also feature a talk with Mitchell and “a live musical performance that reflects the spirit of Guthrie’s legacy;” no further details were given.

“Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad Today,” will air on PBS stations over the summer, per Cash, who said to check local listing.

This is a rabbit hole I’ve only begun to go down. It starts with my long-standing love and fascination with Richard Thompson’s “Beeswing”. I first heard him play it outdoors at a music festival in Adelaide, Australia--sitting 10 feet or less from him. I’ve been under its spell ever since.

Today Greg Mitchell’s “Song of the Day” introduced me to Annie Briggs, who is evidently the inspiration for the song. Her connections to the whole English folk revival of the 60′s are deep and complex. I wish I could take the rest of today to follow more of them, but I can’t. My partner is getting edgy about my being so lost on this and needs me to respond to a work project.
