Album Review: Gregor Barnett - Don’t Go Throwing Roses in my Grave

Don’t Go Throwing Roses In My Grave is the debut full length album out now on Epitaph Records from Gregor Barnett, who many know as vocals and guitar for The Menzingers, a punk rock band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. I have been a long time fan of The Menzingers, so I was very much excited when this album was announced. The first time I saw Barnett do anything solo was when he performed “Rodent” off of Rented World for Space Jam Sessions. I remember how incredible he was in that, so I knew we were in for a treat when he announced this album. Honestly, I’m surprised he hasn’t released a solo album sooner. However, the day has finally come. Don’t Go Throwing Roses in my Grave was produced by Will Yip, who also drummed on the record. Even though it's a solo album, all four members of The Menzingers were involved; Tom May took the photograph for the album cover, Eric Keen played bass and Joe Godino added percussion.

For long time fans of The Menzingers, I think you’re going to be very much into this record. Although it is a lot less punk and a lot more Americana than what you may be used to, there’s a level of comfort from hearing Barnett’s vocals that is just so soothing and wholesome. While he’s arguably written some of the best records in modern punk rock, this record feels like an introduction to Gregor Barnett in the absolute best way. The opening track, “Oh Lord, What Do You Know?” sets the tone for the rest of the record with the country-esque, Americana vibes. The second track, “Driving Through the Night”, is one of the best songs on this album. It’s a little bit more upbeat than the rest of the songs and more The Menzingers-esque. His vocals are so similar to something you’d hear on On the Impossible Past or Hello Exile. While it’s a more fast paced track than the others, it does not feel out of place on the album. Other great songs include “Talking to Your Tombstone”, “Hurry Me Down to Hades”, and the closing track, “Guest In Your House”. Overall, Don’t Go Throwing Roses In My Grave is a great debut album and I’m looking forward to what else Gregor Barnett releases in the future.
