“Wong desa angertanin gumin Ida Batara’ - the people of the village community work and administer the land, but it is the property of the Gods.  This is what is said in the written constitutions of Balinese villages.  How much reverence in the face of the might of surrounding Nature, and how much pious human modesty does this reveal!  All the wisdom and justice which govern the constitutions have their foundations here.  To the invisible Gods which dwell high in the coolness and eternal blueness of the mountains belong the land and everything that grows on it, and the water that streams over it, and the air and the light which caress it in an eternal spring and summer, and the ores concealed in its bosom.
