➤ ⋮ the inquiry comes as a surprise, but jasper doesn’t object. without any hesitation, the soldier takes a seat beside blue as if it were a casual meeting between two quartzes. there is no inhibition or formality in the action. jasper K N O W S the gem is as distraught over the loss of pink diamond as she is. they have much in common despite who they are within the hierarchy—even despite the fact that she and blue haven’t spoken before. for this reason, jasper finds it easy to dismantle the bravado she’s built up for lack of a gem she knows she can trust. she already considers blue diamond a FRIEND.❝ i miss her too, ❞ she says finally. none of the usual gruff aggression she carries within her tone is present. if anything, she speaks GENTLY. she places a hand on the seated diamond’s leg, as it’s all she can reach, && squeezes it. ❝ look. i don’t care what she says. it’s impossible to forget. she was MY diamond. && she was YOUR family. that pain doesn’t just go away when you want it to. ❞as the last sentence leaves her mouth, jasper’s attempts at comfort, at being the STRONGER gem, become only painful reminiscence, && all at once, the two of them are simply mourning together. she makes no attempts to change this, however, as she knows it’s what the both of them need. they’ve been repressing their sadness for far too long. ❝ …look. emotions don’t make you WEAK. ❞ she drops her eyes, jaw set as if saying that much were poison to her ears. homeworld, after all, has taught them the opposite. emotions were seen as an INCONVENIENCE, perhaps even a FLAW. but she knows she must speak the truth in order for blue diamond to understand. reciting the same trite yellow diamond has won’t help matters. ❝ you can MOURN && be a leader at the same time. ❞
