Gli anni che vanno dal 1905 al 1917 - quando avvenne il rovesciamento del governo zarista - sono in Russia un periodo di grande fermento, non solo politico, ma anche culturale. Nascono fino al 1920 movimenti artistici e letterari di grande modernità e originalità, che restano tuttavia ancora sconosciuti alla maggioranza del pubblico occidentale. Dal realismo socialista dei primi anni del ‘900 al suprematismo di Malevich e all’astrattismo di Kandinsky, passando per l’espressionismo, il primitivismo e il cubismo: le avanguardie russe sono la più lampante testimonianza del cambiamento di una nazione che si apre all’Occidente, pur preservando fortemente elementi di una tradizione vibrante e straordinaria.
