Considering we know plegia isn't a landlocked country, I've always wondered how the sea would factor into their culture and beliefs. Are there sects of costal grimleal who worship Grima as a sea serpent?
Maybe something similar to jormungandr seeing as many grimleal view Grima as an 'End-Times' being.
Considering you are the plegia headcanon expert in my eyes I'm curious if you had any ideas on how the sea would factor into the plegian culture.
Now, in fairness, I don't think that most Grimleal view Grima as an end-times being. This is very much a personal thing, but I've gotten really attached to this idea that the majority of Grimleal view Grima as a guardian deity, a protector who kept them safe and was killed by a foreign power (after being driven to despair and rage). With that in mind, they don't look to Grima's return as the end of times, but as an end to their long persecution at the hands of those who took Grima's life in the first place. Even Validar, I think, isn't trying to raise Grima to end the world: he's trying to raise Grima because he wants to leash Grima's power and use it to get everything he wants, from the destruction of Ylisse to full control over Plegia (and the world beyond, though he doesn't broadcast that). I've always seen Validar's motivations as entirely selfish; the rest of Plegia, though, just wants the assurance of safety that they've been missing for a thousand years.
As for how the sea factors in, I've always really liked the idea that there's a lot of cultural differences throughout Plegia based on location. There's the desert, which thrives through strong communal bonds; and there's the sea, which thrives thanks to their proximity to the sea and access to maritime trade. They're all bound together by their shared faith, but they stress different aspects, have different rituals, and even different architecture: a lot of desert temples are actually subterranean, hidden in the sand because of their historic conflicts with Ylissean invaders; the coastal temples are not hidden, though, since invaders have never made it across the desert, so there's not that historic need for concealment; however, both are open to the sky at the top as they await Grima's return to the heavens.
Coastal communities don't necessarily worship the ocean, but they definitely treat it with great respect, knowing how dangerous the waters can be. The surf can get particularly violent in the storms, given the prevalence of cliffs along that coastline, so most communities are built well away from the edge of the cliffs; however, there are sheltered areas that form natural harbors, and these support thriving communities established closer to the water's edge. Lighthouses are also common around particularly rocky areas of the coastline, to safeguard lost vessels. There are doubtless prayers common only in the coastal areas invoking Grima to ensure calm seas or to quiet raging storms, and talismans made with shark teeth and seashell are common compared to the bone and feather constructions in the desert.
With all that said, though, the coastal communities definitely have a slightly different view of Grima based on historic accounts. While I still hold that Grima is a magivore, they can and still enjoy eating physical food, though that's hard to come by on land with their inability to land and take off comfortably and the general absence of large enough prey. The sea is another matter entirely, though: there are probably records of Grima flying out over the sea on occasion and skimming that toothy maw through the water before flying back, bringing with them a rain of wriggling fish falling through the gaps in their teeth. Commence impromptu feast day.
Hello friend (this is Loranil btw slipping into your inbox at 4 am haha) for the prompts: Wedgeluke + them visiting a green planet together (because it’s what luke deserves!!)
Dear friend, WedgeLuke is such a unit of a ship I cannot believe I haven't considered it before--
(I'm using this prompt to explore them for the first time, sorry it's not very cute even thought you're so right and Luke deserves to go sightseeing with his man, but Wedge Antilles and Luke Skywalker give me a lot of OT feelings so, you get 300 words of semi-angst because l'm bad at this game)
A gift for when you wake up ♡

Wedge finds Luke Skywalker in the topmost watch tower of the rebel base. He had only known where to look because an overly worried protocol droid had seen him climb the steep stairs that morning, and although the Rebellion’s newest hero and star pilot is most definitely not listed for something as trite as sentry duty, Luke stands vigilant in the midday-sun, eyes bright and set firmly on the moon’s horizon where the trees meet the sky and green melts into a pallet of pale blue and white.
Below, the evacuation procedures are well underway.
There are many reasons why the Hero of the Battle of Yavin would be hiding out here today, some of which Wedge will never understand. Some of which he understands too well.
It will be some time yet before he understands how Luke Skywalker looks at the colour green.
“Hey, Wedge,” Luke says, spares him a smile before his stare is once again ensnared by the deep jungle beyond. “There are more places like this, right?”
“In the galaxy?” Wedge asks. “I imagine there’s plenty.” Though none will be quite like Yavin now, with its gas giant namesake and the pieces of men and debris forever caught in its orbit.
“If there’s time—I know there might not be, but. I want to see them.”
And Wedge might not know Luke all that well yet, but he had met his friend, had flown with him and fought with him, and had seen in them both the same longing for the stars and their countless, wonderous worlds, and he thinks how many such dreams had become nothing but a scorch mark on the Death Star’s surface. How Wedge had very nearly joined them.
How Luke Skywalker had nearly, too.
“You will,” Wedge promises, and by the stars he will darn well make sure of it.
“Forgive me, my darling children, for birthing you into such a cruel world and burdening you with a terrible fate...” 🤍

A sort of brief backstory for Robin’s mother in a twin AU 🖤 She marries Validar against her will for the sole purpose of birthing a host for Grima. She loves her children but despised her husband and his obsession with the fell god. ⭐️
Hierarchy is extremely important in Plegian culture, despite the equal importance on community and equality. This is partially due to the corruption that has taken place over the years, leading to a sense of self-importance amongst those of the Grimleal court.
Many of these symbols act as a means of authorization. The Grimleal are very secretive about their various endeavours, especially matters related to the Heart.
Accessible/written version under the cut.
Crests of Divine Blood
While anyone may wear Grima’s Eyes, his Crest may only be donned by those of divine blood
Purity of blood/family lineage in general is very well documented in Plegia due to their efforts to birth the Heart
The number of “wings” on a crest symbolizes the purity of blood
Six wings is reserved only for the main line, directly descended from Grima himself. They have been the leaders of the Grimleal faith since its inception
Grima also entered into many blood pacts with humans, leading to a wider spread of his blood
3-5 wings represents those of secondary blood, with the placement of individual wings representing specific family lines
Similarly, 2 or less wings represents minor blood
These crests are often worn as tattoos and displayed as stylized versions on religious attire
Those of divine blood have special responsibilities within the Grimleal order due to their innate connection with Grima
They are some of the only people in Plegia to know anything about the Heart, but even then information is restricted to a select few
Grima’s Brand
The full mark of Grima can only be worn by Grima’s Heart
This is to insure the validity of such a mark when it appears
However, it can still be found on a large number of religious artifacts and artworks. It’s the most important symbol in the Grimleal faith
The Eyes of Grima
Worn by all of Grima’s faithful
It is believed that by donning his eyes, you allow him to see you and take you into his protection
They also play a large role in prayer for a similar reason
There are several different variations of his eyes, from the more menacing sort worn by warriors to softer versions found on religious robes
Cultist Symbol
This symbol belongs to a cult who sacrifices lives in an attempt to gain Grima’s favour
While most Grimleal believe in gifting their life force to Grima (only in small amounts, such as drops of blood), this cult takes it to the extreme, kidnapping villagers to use as their sacrifices
You can see this cult at work in Chalard—who tries to kidnap Nowi—and Ardri, who tries to kidnap Emmeryn. They both wear this crest on their head coverings
Lines of Rank
Marks like these are worn both as tattoos and on the clothing of Grimleal officials
You can see the first on Validar’s robes, and the latter on Robin’s coat
These are used as a means of authorization and a sign of status
Political Crests
Worn by council members, village leaders, etc.
Denotes power to lead
The symbol on the Regent’s crown denotes power to rule
It is worn exclusively by the Regent and the Heart of Grima, as he is the only one with the true right to rule in Grima’s place
Grimleal Crest
Worn by members of the Grimleal court, priests, hierophants, etc.
The symbol on the Archbishop’s headpiece denotes power to lead the religion
Again, the only other person who can don this crest is Grima’s Heart
Crest of Strength
Given to groups such as Dark Knights who display exceptional physical prowess
Often displayed on their uniforms
Diviner’s Crest
Worn by those in the Order of Diviners
Those accepted into the Order are thought to be able to divine Grima’s will. This is sometimes used for people’s own selfish purposes, however
In reality, they are most often just talented diviners with some sort of influence amongst the Grimleal court
They are most frequently worn on circlets like Tharja’s
Sorcerer’s Crest
Awarded to those who display exceptional magical abilities
These can be seen on both Henry and Validar’s clothing
