Name: Gromba
Debut: Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
"I've always been of the mind that Pokemon should combine the Rock and Ground types into a single Earth type." -Gromba
Hi Gromba! I don't entirely agree, as I feel they really make a point of differentiating the two types, so that neither feel redundant in practice. But I definitely get the sentiment.
"What type would you consider brick to be? Ground, since it's made of clay? Rock, since it's hard and firm? Perhaps both? What, then, of sand? It's usually established as comfortably Ground, but truly, it is made of rock. Sandstorm is even a Rock-type move!"
Well, that's just a case of things taking different forms, you know? Ice may be frozen water, but is very distinct from the elemental energy of water. Rock can end up becoming Ground, and the reverse is true with enough pressure. But the post started a while ago, so I'd like to just-
"Hey, while we're talking about this, how have they still not added Sound type? There are so many sound-based moves! What's stopping it from being its own type? For that matter, there are also a lot of biting-based moves. They should add Tooth type."
Please Gromba. Okay so to make up for lost time, Gromba is like a Goomba, but it's either made of, or encased in, bricks. Bricks are a tough thing! I couldn't defeat a brick, but I think I could defeat a Goomba. Well... Gromba is the most basic enemy in Dream Team! So weak that it can be a tutorial, despite its armor! In fact, regular Goombas appear much further into the game, and they're significantly stronger! What an odd decision. You'd think the weakest creature would be something soft. Oh well!
There is not that much else notable about Gromba... except!
Welcome... to Gromba Proboscidean Theory. This is Mammoshka, boss of Mount Pajamaja, professional matryoshka mammoth. It wears a spiked helmet, which might seem predictable, but don't worry, it isn't on the nose. It's on the head!
Mario and Luigi encounter Mammoshka long after any Grombas, so it might be easy to forget about the little knuckleheads, but just now a few minutes ago, I realized! Hey. Mammoshka is also a round thing with a brick outer shell! That's a weirdly specific design choice to appear on two unrelated entities!
So unrelated that it's absolutely a coincidence. The bricks are rendered differently between creatures. But I will never let a mere coincidence stop me from Considering. And in this moment, I consider... it sure would be funny if Grombas were tiny elephants compressed into a spherical shell, like baby Mammoshkas! Mammoshka DOES have four legs compared to the Grombas' two, so maybe they're disciples of it, instead.
That would be a pretty cool religion! I think everyone should decide on an animal to follow in the footsteps in. Imagine meeting someone whose outlook on life is based on Ping-Pong Tree Sponge. Imagine BEING that person. You could be...!
