The Hell - Everybody Dies

I never thought I would see the day when I'd get this fired up over as blatantly ignorant a piece of tough-guy moshcore as this. I discovered masked British louts The Hell when they signed to Prosthetic Records earlier this year and sent out a press release video in which they pretended to kidnap Prosthetic's owner and force him at gunpoint to sign the band. Perhaps a bit sketchy in this day of frequent terrorist video releases that end with someone getting killed, but no one would accuse this band of giving a fuck about that or anything else.

Anyway, the music. Their self-released first album, You're Listening To The Hell, is available as a name-your-price download, and I admit it, I hunted the damn thing down as soon as I saw that fake kidnap video. I was intrigued by a band that seemed to basically be the musical version of antisocial personality disorder, and figured if nothing else they'd be entertainlingly thuggish. What I discovered was a well-produced and totally fucking brutal slab of pure bilious hatred, featuring songs called "Shit Just Got Real" and "It's the Motherfucking Hell (You Dick)," among others. Kind of over-the-top and ludicrous, yes--but when I'm listening to this record, I in no way have enough distance from the experience to know or care about how cheesy it might seem to some. To me, it seems brutal.

The same is true of The Hell's Prosthetic debut, Groovehammer, which came out in July and from which "Everybody Dies" is the lead single. There are still some good song titles on this album ("I'll Snap your Fucking Head Clean Off" takes first prize in that category, though "We Love Dicks" gets honorable mention, mostly because of the [unintentional? can't be though] queer double entendre), but they're less skit-oriented and more devoted to cranking out straightforward songs on this album. I was a little worried about how well that would work, since the first album was pretty much wall-to-wall brutal mosh breakdowns and that kind of thing can get really old. I guess The Hell have figured out my personal sweet spot where that type of songwriting is concerned, though, because I fucking love all of their breakdowns and have no problem listening to 35 straight minutes of them. Sometimes I find myself thinking "Damn, they really should have thought about varying up their tempos at some point." At the same time, I think if I ever saw these guys live, I'd just lose my mind and mosh like a maniac for their entire set, so I should probably stop trying to fix what ain't broke.

The vocals are another great aspect of this band, and probably what makes them stand out the most in the end. They have multiple vocalists, all of whom scream their fucking heads off at all times, putting across a very convincing impression of unhinged psychos who don't give a fuck. I think they've done a really good job of both creating a ridiculously belligerent persona for the band, which makes their music hit like a ton of bricks, while at the same time being so over-the-top with it that it's obviously done entirely for effect and has nothing to do with who they really are as people. If not handled well, the deadpan tongue-in-cheek aspects of their presentation could really wreck their whole trip. Instead, at least to me, it's both brutal and hilarious. Partly that's because I seem to share their sense of humor (songs like "Bangers & Mosh" and "We Handle Shit" crack me the fuck up even as I'm moshing around my bedroom to them), and partly it's because even totally over-the-top psycho behavior always works better for me from a hardcore band than the stereotypical macho tough guy bullshit that plagued the early 90s scene I grew up in.

I was actually ranting to a friend about this over the weekend--I will always take Gehenna yelling about caving your skull in over some tough guy band doing a spoken word breakdown in which they explain in precise detail exactly why the tough guy code gives them full justification for punching you in the face at a show because you said you didn't like the way they punch people in the face at shows. Tough guys always want to come up with an excuse for their bullying bullshit. Psychos are too emotionally unstable to even worry about a justification--they're just pissed and they're gonna do something completely ignorant and unnecessary in response. I'm a really repressed person who has never actually behaved that way in real life, but boy do I identify with wanting to.

So yeah, I get a huge kick out of The Hell playing brutal mosh riffs and screaming their heads off about how they're going to kill you, you fucking dick. And I definitely love that the spoken word breakdown they throw into the middle of "Everybody Dies" is not a justification for anything, but instead a pugnacious endorsement of nihilism:

While you're on your lunch break sipping a chai fucking latte and worrying about [something about data entry, I think], remember this: One day, your heart’s gonna stop and you’ll shit yourself, and eventually be picked up by some [insulting adjective] nurse, stuffed in a body bag and kept in a fucking filing cabinet until they decide to set you on fire or turn you into fertilizer. Have a nice day!

OUTSTANDING.

Final verdict: in a year that has also seen the release of Code Orange's I Am King and King 810's Memoirs Of A Murderer, the climate seems to be ripe for an explosion of awesome moshcore--and that is exactly what you get from The Hell. I'm sure there are some people who will turn up their nose at all this, but personally, I plan on reveling in the sheer ignorance of it all. In conclusion, a word of advice: listen to the motherfucking Hell, you dick.

"Groovehammer" - The Hell (LP review)

"GROOVEHAMMER" - The Hell

Overall: 4/10

Summary: This profane and minimally inspired combination of hardcore and metalcore seems meant for a live setting rather than at-home listening.

Highlights: "Groovehammer," and "Everybody Dies"

Although The Hell introduce an interesting combination of genres only possible in the light of the modern heavy music scene, they deliver only the worst of both worlds. Groovehammer sees hardcore mixing with modern metalcore in the least efficient way possible.

From the hardcore genre, the band procures monotonous simplicity and reckless rage, leaving behind raw energy for calculated rudeness. Nearly flavorless and entirely uninspired repetitive riffing backs deliberately distasteful lyrics. From metalcore, the band takes drop-tuned and kick-synched chug-riffing, forgetting any complexity as well as the first four strings of their guitars. 

The Hell focus so much attention on being obnoxious that the rest of the album lacks any other outstanding feature aside from that crudeness. The result is, in my opinion, reminiscent of Vio-Lence's Torture Tactics. The Hell's preoccupation with "dicks" specifically reminded me of "Dicks of Death," more in lyrical content than musical style.

This is a rare album whose full value can be experienced in as few as two or three listens. It's clear The Hell is just having fun and that they at least don't take themselves too seriously, but on record the music is just silly and dull.
