As a follow up to Pale Blue Eyes, here’s an original I wrote called “Groovy Day in Memphis”. It’s about going out on the town, cats, evolution, Big Star, and tea. The sounds are equally inspired by indie pop like Squalls’ “Na Nanana” and classics like Elvis Presley's “That’s Alright Mama” or Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman”. The track was recorded during the wee morning hours in Ardent Studio A with the help of Wesley Graham. Wesley and I had laid down the rhythm track—drums, bass, piano, and guitar--and verse vocals when Jared McLemore popped up and suggested he add some “beach boys vocals”, the classic sounds you hear between the verses and during the outro. After Jared’s contribution, one listener put it, “this is the happiest song I’ve ever heard”—we hope you feel the same!
