Sometimes, Gi-hun calls Sang-woo.
When the sky is gray, the threat of rain looming over his head, he calls Sang-woo. When he passes a group of school children playing their own games, he calls Sang-woo. When he's downed more alcohol than he remembers drinking, he calls Sang-woo.
When he occasionally passes by as Sang-woo's mother on the phone, her face pinched with worry only a mother could carry for her child, he calls Sang-woo.
He doesn’t know why he keeps calling -- that's a lie, he knows why he keeps calling the number of his dead childhood best friend. He knows why he patiently waits through each tedious ring of the phone. He knows why his chest aches with disappointment when hes inevitably met with Sang-woo's voicemail.
With every call, Gi-hun imagines that this time Sang-woo will answer the phone. He imagines that Sang-woo will answer the phone and ask "what do you want?" in his most unimpressed voice. He imagines that Sang-woo will answer the phone, and that everything on that island was nothing more than a bad dream.
But, contrary to popular belief, Gihun's not an idiot. Nor will he let himself hold on to such a childish belief. There's no waking up from this. There’s no amount of wishing that will bring the man back to him.
No matter how many times he calls, his calls will only go to voicemail. It’s why he keeps calling: to hear Sang-woo's voice again, even if it's just to hear the same message over and over. At this point, Gi-hun can recite the message perfectly word-for-word in his sleep.
Gi-hun's never been one to believe in ghosts or the afterlife, but Sang-woo may as well be haunting him with how often Gi-hun sees him in the mundane - the gray rain clouds pouring down on him, soaking him to the bone. The school children splashing around in puddles of mud, dirtying their uniforms. The bitter taste of alcohol lingering on his tongue, making him wish he had something sweet to chase down that bitterness.
He calls Sang-woo.
He stands in the rain, letting the cold drops fall on him as he holds his phone to his ear. It rings, and rings, and keeps on ringing. Hopelessly, he wishes for Sang-woo to answer this time. Instead of the monotone voicemail of his best friend, Gi-hun wishes he'll be met with an exasperated greeting this time. He hopes that instead of a voicemail, he'll be told to "stop calling me" from a man who can't answer the phone anymore.
Gi-hun wishes that it'll be different this time. Almost prays for it to be different.
The ringing stops. It’s not Sang-woo's voicemail that greets him this time.
"The mailbox is full. Please try again later."
gbu is genuinely very entertaining to watch. on one hand u got angel eyes doing his main mission trying to find bill carsons money, meanwhile blondie and tuco are too busy doing random-ass side missions together while simultaneously beating angel eyes at his main mission
