Take that I am unsure the temperature of: Anyone who thinks Kaladin and Shallan should date has fundamentally misunderstood the point of the whole love triangle arc, which was about being in love with the image of someone vs being in love with the actual person. Kaladin and Shallan were in love with their perceptions of each other but didn't care to actually understand each other beyond the images they'd built. They only saw each other as ideals, not real human beings.

Here is a short, hilarious scene written by the lovely PyrothTenka for Sanitize!

Hearing a knock on her door (the one to her parents’ hovel, she had to move back in after the fire until the new clinic is built), Yui is not expecting to find two ninja bowing prostrate on the ground before her. Yet there they are. She doesn’t get a chance to speak before Hashirama (because of course one of them is him) is practically yelling an apology.

“LADY YUI! WE, THE SENJU CLAN, BEG FORGIVENESS FOR THIS MASSIVE GRIEVANCE WE HAVE INFLICTED UPON YOU AND YOUR VILLAGE! PLEASE ALLOW US TO MAKE AMENDS!”

“Hashi-”

“TO START WITH, WE PRESENT TO YOU OUR CLANSMAN WHO WRONGED YOU TO BE YOUR SERVANT UNTIL HER MISDEEDS HAVE BEEN REPAID!”

“Hashirama, you can’t-”

“FURTHER MORE, WE HAVE REBUILT YOUR CLINIC EVEN LARGER AND BETTER THAN BEFORE COMPLETE WITH NEW HERB GARDENS!”

“-just give someone as a slave- Wait, what?”

Yui barely had the words out of her mouth before before she was suddenly standing somewhere else. And in Hashirama’s arms, though only for a moment as he was quick to release her so he could gesture grandly with both arms at the structure before them.

All thoughts of yelling protests at his rough treatment fell out of her head as she stared open mouthed at the three story building that now stood where the burnt out ruins of her old clinic had once been. There was even a green house! Yui didn’t have words for situations like these! “AND FURTHER MORE OUR CLAN HEIR HAS AGREED TO A MARRIAGE CONTRACT BETWEEN THEM AND YOU TO SEAL AN ALLIANCE BETWEEN US!”

The healer whirled on him with a deadly glare. She definitely had words for situations like this, however inappropriate for public they may have been!

Watching the entire spectacle from a tree some distance away, Madara scowled in displeasure. Bound and gagged at his feet was his own clansmen. “Damn Senju. Beat me to it...”

Another take: Veil is kind of a manifestation of Shallan's disdain for herself. She actively devalues everything Shallan likes or finds comfort in. She has and will happily use Shallan's skills but devalues everything it took to learn them, and her disdain for Shallan's upbringing and mannerisms is matched only by her disdain for Shallan's feelings. Veil is all ABOUT image, but actively devalues the substance behind it because acknowledging it would undermine her pretended expertise. 1/2

Ultimately Veil results from Shallan's failures of self-empathy. She is built as a coping mechanism to avoid processing feelings. But Shallan sucks at perceiving herself accurately, as is confronted in her meeting with Hoid in OB, and as a result Veil sees Shallan in her entirety as Shallan sees herself when she's most frustrated while ratcheting up more severe character flaws (judgemental, shallow, skating by on talent, etc) by throwing out feelings that challenge her self-confidence. 2/2
