"Portrait of a Lady" 1917 unfinished oil on canvas by Gustaf Klimt (1862-1918) at @legionofhonor the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. Written near the painting: The freshness of the coloring in this work, left incomplete upon Klimt's death, lends it vibrancy. The only part to be painted with any degree of "finish" is the very pale made-up face. This example reveals how Klimt's working process differed from that of other artists who might prefer to work simultaneously on every section of an emerging composition. "Portrait of Gertrud Loew" 1902 oil on canvas by Gustaf Klimt (1862-1918) at @legionofhonor the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. Written near the painting: This portrait of the nineteen-year-old Gertrud Loew was painted in 1902—the same year as Rodin's brief visit to Vienna. Stylistically, it belongs to Klimt's series of women dressed in white, inspired by the American artist James McNeill Whistler's portraits. The sitter's father was director of the famous Loew sanatorium in Vienna, where both Klimt and the composer Gustav Mahler were treated. The facility closed in 1938 and Gertrud—later Gertha Loew-Felsöványi—fled Austria in April 1939 for the United States.
