I Didn't Do the Right Thing
I am thoroughly ashamed of myself today. I did a very rotten thing. I saw someone in need and ignored it.
I was catching the metro from Guy Concordia and as I descended the escalator noticed a big group of teens harassing the street musician. Technically I didn't realise he was being harassed until I walked past and saw his hopless, resigned face. There were at least ten of these teens and they were laughing and playing the key board and picking his stuff apart.
I kept walking. I caught the metro and left the station behind me. Why the hell did I do that?? I am not supposed to be like this! Sure. Taking on ten aggressive teens on my own wouldn't have done much. But why did I just walk past? I could've gone back up and alerted security. But I didn't. I walked past and hoped someone else would deal with it. But everyone walked past them. No one helped. Just like me.
In Norwegian there is an expression; "I don't bully, I only watch".
That's what I did. I am as bad as the bullies.
I did allert the personell at Lasalle station, but I am afraid it was too little too late. I can only imagine what the musician must have felt... NO ONE helped in one of the busiest metro stations in town. His plagued face will haunt me. Hopefully it will remind me to do the right thing in the future.
Please, don't be like me.
