Who are your top ten favorite H50 characters and why?
Wow anon that's a tough question! And this might end up really long so bare with me
Number 10 - Fong. To this day I don't know why he got fazed out of the show. I thought he was really sweet and an interesting character with loads of potential to build up storylines from. And y'know, I kinda shipped him with Kono (sorry adam)
Number 9 - Junior. I genuinely thought he'd be further on the list, but he kept being bumped. I actually really liked him? Idk, i think the writers were out of ideas or unwilling to explore storylines and make the show interesting again by the end of s7, so when they introduced junior and tani, it was kinda refreshing? But I'm pretty sure I'm alone in this opinion (but s8-s9 was all kinds of meh in regards of character driven storylines for steve and danny)
Anyway, I loved his sunny disposition and how earnest he was. And him pining for tani was adorable
Number 8 - Nahele. Look, he appears for maybe 30 minutes in total throughout the show, but that's my baby. He had so much potential to push the storyline forward, specially for steve. (This ranking system is probably gonna turned out biased on how much potential a character had and got wasted). I really wished they had worked with his character better and not just fazed him out (they kept doing that huh? Just straight up giving up on characters)
Number 7 - Grace. Her relationship with danny is everything to me. But her relationship with Steve is also everything to me. When I was watching s9 last year and found she wasn't gonna appear in the final season i legit almost stopped watching, because the best thing about this show, for me personally, was all the interpersonal relationships
Number 6 - Chin. He's just the best. He takes no shit and he's so kind. It's a tough line to walk but he really does. He deserves all the best things. He took all the shit everyone threw at him and rose above it, roughly and ungracefully, but he did.
Number 5 - Lou. His humour just gets me, i don't know what to tell ya. And I almost went into shock when I realized he was cob from pushing daisies. I love that he has such big emotions. (I hate the ep that he overworks a golf assistant(?) Like it's nothing, its a big yikes for me). And I loved his rivalry with steve in the beginning. He was chased down from his home, and made himself a new one.
Number 4 - Tani. She really shone in the 8th season for me. And I think megan rath really brought the character to life. I wish her and danny had more interactions, because their combined snark would be glorious. I loved her storyline with koa and the few bits of backstory we got from her were really good. I love that she was virtually incapable of being chill about her feelings.
Number 3 - Wo Fat. He was a good ass villain and the writers chased that high unfruitfully for every season since. Up until the doris storyline he was really solid for me. A ruthless crime boss with connections everywhere and to everyone, who locks on a target and doesn't let go? Sign me up. That's the only villain for a guy like Steve McGarrett. And his undoing was his own hubris and ego. (But again, his doris storyline was kinda not that well done for me. The execs seemed kinda confused about their own show)
Number 2 - Kono. She owns my entire heart, what else can I say? I really wished her character arcs revolved more around her and not her relationship with Adam (sorry adam). I love that she's just so scrappy, and holds her own in a fight, but she cares so much about her loved ones, and she's such a good investigator that won't let go until she gets her perp.
Number 1 - Steve and Danny, as cliche as this might be. I couldn't pick just one for top spot, so they're tied. Steve is a broken man who tries so hard to put himself back together with the people around him. Danny is a broken man who tries so hard not be.
The show really was its best when their relationship wasnt thrown under the bus for petty reasons.
And wow this got away from me. I realise some of this is just me rambling about the stuff the show got wrong, sorry for that
But thanks for the ask, i thoroughly enjoyed thinking about this!
