PSA: Account Hacking & Deactivation
So a friend of mine and I learned today that her blog was suddenly deactivated. Given the last post on there had been just shy of two weeks ago I’m much more inclined to suspect foul play. Now the reason I bother to bring this up at all, especially after having been dead so long on this account due to low musing, is to remind people of certain things and help spread the word.
First of all, if for any reason you have suspicions of your account being compromised, check your theme, your activity, log in sessions and a number of other things with your account. Check the email and make sure it hasn’t been changed, check your email to make sure it can still be accessed and change your password to be safe. Be sure to contact Tumblr Support too.
Second, I’d love to make the reminder that tons of people already know; hacking is a crime. Even if you don’t like someone, don’t like their portrayal of a muse or any other reason don’t resort to criminal activity. This shouldn’t even have to be stressed. Do you realize how stupid of an action it is to commit a crime over petty reasons? That’s already assuming that it’s understood that criminal activity is stupid in and of itself. Pettiness only makes it even more stupid. Instead of calling out people you don’t like, or worse, hacking them and deleting all of their hard work and their account, perhaps use the tools made readily available to you and block them so you don’t see their posts and can’t interact with them.
Third, to the people who conduct these acts, I genuinely hope you’re satisfaction in doing these sort of things to people turns to guilt and that you own up to your wrong doings. Not just in the case of my dear friend, but those who’ve done these sorts of things to others. Having all of your hard work, be it a day or years worth, deleted and being a victim to a cyber crime because someone couldn’t be rational and human, is a soul crushing experience. In accounts less petty or more drastic to this I can only imagine that it feels far worse.
Finally, to those who read and share this; thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. These things shouldn’t happen to anybody.
