"Just Friends"

Synopsis: In which you and Mark are just friends, and nothing more.

Warnings: angst, pining, hints of reader liking Mark as more than a friend

You and Mark had grown up together. He was your best friend. When you had a bad day, he was there to cheer you up, taking you out to get ice cream. When Todd pushed Mark into his locker, you were there to stand up for him.

The two of you were practically inseparable. Your parents always joked that you two were made for each other, and while you agreed, it just wasn't in the way they thought.

Mark was your bestest friend. You were two pieces of a puzzle, but nothing more.

Eventually, Mark got his powers, and after accidentally crash landing in your backyard during one of his test runs, the secret was let out to you too. You swore secrecy; Mark's troubles were your troubles, and his secrets were yours.

You'd swiped a hand across your lips, mimicking a zipper, before you patted him on the shoulder and encouraged him back into the sky.

After Mark got his powers, his world began to separate from yours. He met Amber and Eve and Rex and Cecil and so many more. He was constantly needed to help save lives, and with his dating life becoming more complicated, you found yourself lacking his company.

It was alright, though. You understood. Besides, every few weeks, Mark made sure to still check in on you. He'd wince when you poked at his ribs sometimes, and his smile would wobble, the cut on his lips still unhealed. But he made time, and that was all that mattered.

When Mark fought his dad, you didn't sit in your room and watch the news anxiously. You rushed over to his house - only a few blocks away - worried about Debbie. You found the house empty save for a few GDA agents, who rushed you to the headquarters.

It was there that you watched Mark - no, Invincible, battle against Omni-Man. You listened as his own father said horrible things about his mother, who you held in your arms. You watched your best friend get beaten to a pulp by the man he thought he loved the most.

During Mark's recovery, you sat next to him the whole time. You took care of Debbie, bringing her food and water, and lent her a shoulder to cry on.

Mark's biggest concern when he woke up was Amber. You understood, really, what with them dating and all, but you still would've appreciated some acknowledgement.

It was okay, though. You understood.

Then Mark went to space and brought back Oliver. You didn't even hear about him until after Mark and Amber broke up, until after Angstrom Levy had already terrorized Mark's family.

Mark's contact with you decreased even faster after that. Whenever you showed up to his house to hang out, you found only Debbie and baby Oliver there, who was growing much faster than he should've been. Alien genes, you guessed.

You found your time filled with hanging out with Debbie and sometimes Oliver, though when she started dating Paul and Oliver got his powers, you found that neither of them had time for you either.

Sure, you could've hung out with William, but he, too, had someone he cared about now: Rick. You didn't want to get between them, either.

Then the Invincible variants showed up. You were at home when it happened. Your first instinct, again, was to rush over to Mark's house and see if Debbie was okay. She must've known this, though, because she called you the moment you heard the news.

"Stay at home, [Name]," she said. "My house is not safe; they'll probably go there first."

Her reasoning made sense, but it still hurt that she thought that you weren't important enough to Mark in any universe for him to show up at your door.

Why didn't she take you and your family to someplace safe?

Maybe she saw it too; the way you and Mark had drifted apart. It stung.

A twisted part of you hoped, as you lay curled up in bed, that one of Mark's variants would show up to your house. That he would show up and tell you how much you mattered to him, that you would always be his bestest, number one friend, no matter which universe.

No such thing happened.

And as you lay there, cold and alone, you could feel the last strands of your friendship snap, and your heart broke just a little.

Maybe you weren't so perfect for each other after all.

Invincible S3E7: "What Have I Done?"

One thing that has consistently impressed me about the show adaptation of Invincible has been the affirmation of the emotions of the characters. Especially when shit hits the fan (and believe me, shit hits the fan in this episode!) the show emphasizes the fucked-up nature of what's happening, and lets you sit in it in a way that the original comic couldn't.

This episode was a straight banger in that regard. I thought at first it was just boring, but this was because they were building the tension throughout, and I straight-up stopped fidgeting entirely because the action happening on-screen took my full attention.

I do think the fights were a little boring, and the destruction didn't feel as awful as it does in the comics, but there's a heavier focus on civilian deaths in this one which makes what we do see feel weightier. The comic is a series of vignettes tightly packed together, giving the impression of everything happening all at once, but with the linear nature of the show you end up having to make sacrifices. And they're obviously saving their big budget animation for the finale, which promises to be... truly something.

(Side note: as a reader of the comics there were about a dozen characters I wasn't expecting to see here. The Astonishing Wolf-Man? Brit? Tech Jacket? I didn't think they would be adapted for copyright reasons, like the Dynamo Five, Spawn, Witchblade or the Savage Dragon, who all cross over in the comic)

But! The reason I am making this post in the first place was because I thought everyone needed to know the names of Mark's alternates and their own spin on the "Invincible" name. I saw the names of a couple and spent some time googling, and I'm thankful there's a source who can tell us them all. (side note: they got slightly more characterization in the show than the comic, which makes sense, but props to Steven Yeun for giving each one he voiced a distinct personality and tenor)
