Independence:  58 years On.

Independence came and went. Fifty-eight years of self government. Fifty eight years of real and imagined progress. 

Real Progress means we have stopped killing each other in support of political parties at election time. Real, because our differing ideologies forced an undeclared civil war in the seventies and early eighties. It happened in Portland first [what can I say!] that members of the JLP and PNP came together without mishap in the same square: in lighthearted joy  and friendly camaraderie. It was ‘We the People’ who turned the nastiness over and brought in that new day.  Real progress is that we actually have a system of government that works. We do take recourse to change governments in our elections. There have been more than a few landslide victories  for both parties. Beyond the parties busing people into Sam Sharpe Square and Half Way Tree [ Yes, I know its Mandela Square ], we the people went into the little cubicles and voted out those who displeased us.  This is markedly different from voting in those we have confidence in. Along the way though, less of us bother to vote. We are fed up on all sides. We see no real difference in a given party at the public trough. Hence a dwindling percentage of active voters. A hint to party leaders now and in the future. Leadership  really matters and Jamaica has already demonstrated that when we are past a given leader, they are really politically dead.  Hegemony in your party does not convert to leadership of this nation.

Imagined, because we are still in an undeclared war with thuggery and organized crime. We have been killing each other at more than a thousand per year, and you know I am being generous with the numbers here.  We would rather die than change this part of the system. We gain from it. Our informal economy benefits from bandooloo.  Some of us, in fact too many of us, depend on corruption, so we accept as a necessary evil, the enforcement killing and the naked power of the gun and offer up our children and our citizens  as  burnt offering to Moloch [ read your Bible!].

Imagined because the hidden powers behind the throne still pull the strings  to suit themselves. Do you know how much it costs to run an election? Favours beget favours and the populace is wise to ‘ He who pays the piper calls the tune’. See, There is still a benefit from living with or visiting granny regularly. That ancient wisdom still stands the test of time. 

This of course is not a deep dive. We are still in the wading pool, still learning to paddle and we haven’t learned to scuba dive yet. Neither have we learned to do the political fancy dives of Olympic Diving!] We are not sure where and how we will dive but we are in the water and we are making a joyful splash with what we have.
