כשהתעוררתי, תחושת מחנק בפלג העליון של חלל הבטן סימנה שעדין לא הגיעה זמנה של הבחילה- מהפלגת הלילה רצופת תקלות שהסתיימה בנמל תל אביב ולא באשקלון כפי שתוכנן- להתפוגג. ניסיתי להיזכר מהו ספר ההרפתקאות עם התמונות בשחור-לבן שהשאיל לי בחלום אחד משני הספרנים (לא זה עם שפם היטלר) ולא הצלחתי. שכבתי במיטה, ללא יכולתי לזוז, קורבן של פוסט מחלת הים. מקור הנחמה,שגרוע ככל שארגיש, היה יכול להיות גרוע שהרי מדובר בפוסט הפלגה הוא שעצם הניחום נוגד תסמין מפורסם של מחלת ים: אותה היטמעות מוחלטת בהוויה סביבך נטול געגוע לרחם, ללא שביב תקווה לגן עדן אבוד על היבשה. לא נותר לי אלא להתקפל הצידה, לכרוע לפני דמותה של "הלברג ראסי" הספינה בת ה-30 ולומר לה אני מקבל אותך כישות מקודשת, מנהיגה לחיים. כעבור מספר דקות בתנוחת כריעה הקאתי, משחרר מיץ טלטולים חזרה לאוויר העולם. נזכרתי בבושה, השפעת יום כיפור המתקרב, כמה אכזרי אני מסוגל להיות כלפי חברי המתפללים לאבן/פטרייה/גפן

OK - so the story so far....

So I was going to buy a yacht when I retired and do the sensible thing till then which is to charter, and then share via a fractional sailing scheme.  We did those things and then I got this growing passion to do a long trip....

Initially it was crossing the Atlantic in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) then once my long-suffering wife, B, said she REALLY didn't fancy that we settled on a UK circumnavigation.  Still a great adventure but very different.  I love these home isles of ours and would love to see them all from that unique perspective of the sea.  In addition this worked for us as we could  stay in close touch with family and even drop in on most of them on the way round.  It also gave us a chance to give friends a week or so's "leg" if they could cope with the privations and our company and somehow get to remote spots of the UK to board.

So to cut a long story short, after studying various websites, blogs, and a book on yacht surveying I squared the circle by choosing on a design of yacht that would suit us.  For those uninitiated you either buy a modern, fast, manoeverable plastic boat, spacious in harbour but pretty uncomfortable in a big nasty sea OR an older, more solid and rugged, slightly slower boat with beautiful traditional lines, and amazing "sea-keeping" - yes, you've guessed which I went for!  OK I've oversimplified what is a very complex topic, but I set my heart on a Swedish make called a Hallberg-Rassy who are known for making sturdy beautiful yachts that can sail anywhere and frequently do.

The one snag - they cost twice as much as the rest.  So if you wanted a classic car what would you do? Buy a clapped out old one and do it up!  Which led me to Sandwich on the tip of Eastern Kent on a promising March day this year.

She was out of the water and the second biggest boat in the old-fashioned traditional yard.  35 feet of rugged, slightly "well-used" beauty.  She was a Hallberg-Rassy 352 - one of the first "modern" designs of the company that built their reputation in the late seventies.  She was no 34 out of the mould and built in 1979.  They went on to make over 800 - that's a lot in boat-building terms.  Andy her owner was an instantly likeable guy, and toldme he had bought her in Turkey and sailed her back to the UK 16 months previously.  I quickly checked the essentials - a clean sound looking hull, good rigging and decent teak deck.  Down below was not quite so promising but she still had all the original mahogony woodwork.  I was smitten and as I drove away after sharing the news of my find with B walking along Pegwell Bay, I drove away up the M2 and the most enormous harvest full moon shone in my rear mirror - a sign if there ever was one!

4 months on, some haggling, a hairy delivery round Dungeness to Portsmouth and she is ours - Bronagh Claire.  Just not sure about the name, so we've been working on alternatives.  "Fat Zoe" is my current favourite (deep with hidden meaning - fullness of life...) but it has been strangely rejected out of hand...

We have completed a 2 week "shaking down" trip to Devon and back and now are continuing to address the hundreds of restoration/repair issues  that beckon.  More of that later when you will meet Jim, my best Mate, be bored by my crash course in Marine Electronics and learn of the vision we have for her as she starts to worm her way into our lives.....
