“No, it’s not your fault.”

"the thing is," floribeth says quietly, "you're right. i know that. logically, i know that. there is nothing more i could have done to save gawain. i know that it's not my fault."
for a moment, the tiny vampire is quiet. then she's quick to add: "nor yours. no matter what my former roommate, druscilla kamiya, tells you." druscilla wants powerful witches for her coven. powerful magic users. druscilla wants madison. and how could druscilla not want them? the redhead is power personified, after all.
"i don't even know him. not really. the only thing we've got in common is the fact that his wife has a similar nickname. except hers is spelled with an e after the i."
she runs a hand through her hair, seemingly without thinking about it.
"imagine it: you live your life, you become a knight, then you die and your body is dumped with the lady of the lake. or a lady of the lake. she binds you to an automaton of some kind and either slows your aging process or stops it entirely. you're cursed to obey only one command for all infinitude until someone speaks your name as a lover would. you wake up to find you're... time displaced. i think that's a good word for it. the world's changed. your friends? gone. family? gone. lovers? gone."
the thought makes a shiver dance down her spine. again and again.
"josie told me that there's nothing more i could've done. that holding him as he died was a kindness. and lizzie said that a layered binding spell like that could not be unraveled anymore. but sometimes i wonder... i wonder if---could i have done more than just wear black the following day and mourn him? should i have done more? should i have fed him my blood? should i have turned him?"
