There Are Ten Things You Need to Know
(Most of these are soap-box items and represent merely my thoughts. They are not necessarily facts. Please feel free to rebut or refute any of them if you are so inclined.)
Number One: There are two meanings for “You do you.” One meaning is roughly the equivalent of a more neutral “you go with your bad self.” It is meant as a statement of, if not support, then of acceptance. Something along the lines of YKINMK. The other meaning is one of disdain, as in “what you’re doing/believing is questionable, and I don’t have the time, energy, interest, or capacity to correct you, so I’m going to leave it be, but don’t stop making a fool of yourself on my account.”
So.... check in with the person who’s using it to describe you before you feel insulted.
Number Two: It is not just incumbent on female-gendered people to combat misogyny. It is a duty for all of us.
Number Three: The world bends to those who act upon it. Merely discussing action won’t be enough. But discussing action is still the best way to make sure you have the proper strategy before you engage. Just make sure you act. Make sure you engage.
Number Four: Criticism is not the same as shame. But too often, criticism is a vehicle for shame.
Number Five: Someone once said “the unexamined life is not worth living.” I think it’s true of kink as well. We all have problematic faves and problematic kinks. But the only way to make sure that your kink isn’t a problem is to understand how risky that kink is. Risk awareness for kink is key. Part of your risk awareness really should include the danger your kink runs in perpetuating stereotypes and feeding into existing toxic power structures. I mean, why shouldn’t it? Yes, at the end of the day, a kink is “just” something we want to get off to. But doesn’t that make it *more* worthy of examination, not less?
Number Six: Life requires you to participate. If you don’t act, what’s the difference between you and your pet?
Number Seven: Porn should be more representative of our culture. FFS, if Hamilton can cast predominantly non-whites in all the roles, why can’t our porn?
Number Eight: Likewise, we should be unafraid to challenge depictions of kink as casting doms and subs in too-structured roles and clothes. I am so happy that gentle femdom is becoming more of a thing. DDlg has connotations of gentle male-dom, but I would love there to be more depictions of tenderness alongside the hot and heavy impactful kink.
Number Nine: Hamilton was wearing glasses. And so am I. And everything is going to get worse before it gets better.
Number Ten: When you care about someone, and you make them smile and laugh, their laugh and smile and voice becomes a comfort. And when they’re not around, you miss them.

Me, to a student who is just sitting there when she should be reading: What are you working on? Student: I'm trying to think of what book I should read, but it keeps going back to Hamilton lyrics.
