And because I was already thinking about Hamlet for some reason, this made me think of aus where:

Horatio's ghost continues to narrate the story of what happened to other people even after he himself is dead, whether the other people want to hear it or not

Horatio literally lets the ghosts of his dead friends possess him so he can narrate their memories more accurately/keep them alive in a sense, even if it has a detrimental impact on one or both parties

So I am kinda sleepy right now so this probably won't be my best work, but lately I've been thinking about a Hamlet AU where Gertrude drowned Ophelia on purpose and then lied about it. This is just vague ramblings about the circumstances that might cause this to occur:

Ophelia's mental breakdown makes her too unpredictable. By the point of Ophelia's drowning, it's pretty safe to say that everyone has already been seriously losing their shit, for lack of better words. Everyone is going off the rails and in danger of hurting each other, Gertrude included. For whatever reason, she sees Ophelia's strong-but fracturing- connection to Hamlet and her ensuing mental breakdown as something that can't be allowed to slide. Ophelia is getting too unpredictable now, and, if Gertrude suspects she knows about Hamlet Sr.'s murder, or could maybe even be involved in Hamlet's plot to kill Claudius (again, assuming Gertrude is aware of or suspects these things at this point in this AU for some reason), then she's too dangerous to be allowed to stay around.

Gertrude really hates Ophelia for some unspecified personal reason, and something just made her say "fuck it! Everyone is already trying to kill each other anyway" and just murdered her. This kind of ties into the third potential scenario:

Gertrude drowns Ophelia to specifically harm Hamlet and/or further break him down. Now, this definitely happens in an AU where Gertrude and Hamlet's relationship is significantly more toxic than it already is, likely full on abusive. They already had a messed up dynamic in the original play, but I still got the sense that Gertrude didn't want to directly harm her son and obviously cared for him (in her own way) but in this AU, the gloves are off. Maybe Gertrude knows about Hamlet's plot to kill Claudius, and, choosing Claudius over her son, does something she knows will further hurt and isolate him, or maybe even planned to admit to killing Ophelia to scare Hamlet away from killing Claudius, but backed out at the last second and just lied.

Involuntary manslaughter. Somehow, perhaps after some kind of confrontation, Gertrude lost control and drowned Ophelia without meaning to, and then lied to save her own skin. (I have a personal interpretation in this AU that Gertrude's hatred/dislike of Ophelia would stem from some deeply rooted and hidden personal issues, perhaps maybe even seeing her younger self in Ophelia and not being able to stand it.)
