“Study the teachings of the pine tree, the bamboo, and the plum blossom. The pine is evergreen, firmly rooted, and venerable. The bamboo is strong, resilient, unbreakable. The plum blossom is hardy, fragrant, and elegant.” - Morihei Ueshiba 🔸 Hanegi Park, Setagaya 🔸 6 March 2018 🎶 Radiohead - No Surprises

Tokyo Hanegi Park
Easily, hands down, the worlds most bizarre playground - nay, scene, I've ever witnessed. Picture this: kids in trees, kids swinging from ropes, kids cooking sweet potatoes over open flames, hammering, digging, rolling in mud, painting, screaming, running. You name it, these kids were doing it. The supervision factor was low, but the danger factor was high (So Many Nails!!!) Some parents milled around, though most choose to stand on the periphery drinking beer and chatting.
Now, it's not as though these activities aren't popular with kids - in fact, growing up in the countryside, everything felt so fun (re: terrifying) and familiar. What was intriguing was that this playground is in the middle of Tokyo. Props to parents for giving their kids the freedom to act like kids, props to the government for not caring whether they get sued (remember the nails...!). But, it was incredible to compare park scene to one in New York City - where parents have a reputation of being obsessively, eye-rollingly, overprotective. Dangerous, sure, but totally refreshing.
