thinking about how in s3 we only ever see hannibal with a piano because he’s resigned himself to dwelling in a state of memory... i don’t feel like rewatching or sorting through scripts but if i remember correctly, it’s the only instrument we see him play in s3, and that’s in italy—the whole arc of which, i’d argue, “has the quality of a memory.” and not only does it have the quality of a memory—it’s will’s instrument. on a meta level, will’s theme has been voiced by a piano since day one. and as i’m never not thinking about it, i’m sure we all remember hannibal checking out will graham’s piano and plunking out the first few notes of rite of spring. a small moment, sure, but no detail is too small or insignificant to draw hannibal’s attention. also in addition to italy i can’t not mention the piano in the bluff-top house... the place where abigail was kept, where they all could have been, the future he’d planned for them to have...
