Tangled au for everyone btw

Jesper is Eugene. Wylan is Rapunzel (Jan Van Eck is Mother Gothel) (he will be reunited with Marya) (he is painting the walls as we speak).

Kaz is Eugene (complete with sheltering in a made-up identity). Inej is Rapunzel (Heleen is Mother Gothel) (and he literally reunites her with her parents…)

Nina is Eugene (also using a fake identity in kos-row) (and grew up in an orphanage). Hanne is Rapunzel (The Wellmother is Mother Gothel I suppose) (but twist: their parents are worse) (also they literally have healing powers).

I know I know, I tried to write about Matthias here, but he doesn’t fit this specific au vision as well as Hanne does. And Hanne is new enough that they never get any love so calm down.

I’ve gone on about kanej but not the others. Since a few people also enjoy thinking about adult crows/post canon/next gen:

Kanej kid(s):

They first take in a street kid or a now-orphan Inej had to liberate. Too young. It’s temporary, until they find them a home…until it is not. Turns their lives upside down in a good way, makes them even closer. Eventually I imagine them being able to have their own. On purpose and without undue fear. They’d want more eventually.

Wesper kid(s):

I think Wylan specifically would not want children of his own because parental trauma. Jesper, eventually would want to be a father. Like. After a long time. That might test them. So they’d either be real content being uncles to Kanej’s kids or they’d maybe eventually adopt if Wylan can be convinced he won’t hurt the kid one way or another. And that they have enough time in the day.

I don’t think they’d ever have a part in raising Alys’s kid. I think the whole baby-half-sibling that could potentially delegitimise his inheritance, symbol of his father’s hate, thing would turn Wylan even further away from kids for awhile.

Hannina kid(s):

Hey I don’t know how transition and tailoring works in a world with this magic system and neither do you. So could they have biological kids? Who’s to say. It’s kind of dissatisfying either way you explain the limits of the magic. Lots of implications.

However, they’d need an heir and I think they’d both (or at least Nina would) make loving, joyful break-the-cycle parents. Imagine. Nina the orphan adopting Grisha orphans and therefore elevating a Fjerdan Grisha baby, a baby that should be hunted, to being cherished and also inheriting the country. It’s bold and it’s probably what she’d want.

Ik it’s been said before, but it is just so fucking hilarious to me that I could go “oh, I’ve just been thinking about my favourite book series. You know, the one with the found family, the group of people named after black birds, the most captivating and nuanced characters you’ll ever read about (with traumatic backgrounds) and the absolutely top tier queer romance” and I could be talking about not one, not two, but THREE different series. I think I have a type 😭

Nina Zenik went from being captured by Fjerdans because they hate people of her kind, to becoming the princess and the future queen of the same people that wanted her dead.

Idk guys, it's a clear exemple of upward mobility to me.

Okay, but do we think that when Hanne will meet Kaz they will have the same thought thread as Matthias and then just casually be like: “How did you guys get yourself a demon for a friend?”

But they don’t know the Kerch word for “demon” so they say demjin, and for a second everyone just freezes and looks at them with round eyes.

The person who doesn’t look at them is Kaz because he can’t even move, and he is turned away from others. Then Jesper unfreezes and tries to switch the topic. And Kaz just stands there.

Later on, Inej appears next to Hanne when they are leaving, and waiting for Nina. She tells them to never use the word “demjin” when referring to Kaz again.

Hanne of course asks why, and from the door behind them, they hear Kaz’s footsteps and the sound of his cane stumping on the floor.

He appears and slowly and quietly explains the story behind that nickname.

Hanne is shocked by the story, Inej is shocked by Kaz actually explaining it, and Kaz just tries to keep the tide waters down and overstep his fear of grief.

When Nina returns to the three of them, Kaz offers to walk her and Hanne to the hotel they’re staying in. Inej offers to go with them because she’s not sure why would Kaz offer something like that.

While they walk Kaz starts to tell Hanne the “rumors” he’d "heard" about the Ice Court break-in. Nina and Inej are exchanging glances in the back, trying to figure out what Kaz is trying to do. Like does he want to kill Hanne? Or to threaten them?

But nothing happened. Both Nina and Inej are surprised. They will never know that Hanne is one of the first people Kaz tried to start a friendship with after crows and after his revenge was finished.

And he will never tell them.
