;birthday letters;

A few minutes passed as Jongin lay in bed, attempting to wake himself, that it dawned on him that it was his birthday. He knew that it didn’t mean so very much, that it was simply another year and birthdays were generally fun but they didn’t hold the same sort of significance as they used to. But that wasn’t to say he was particularly displeased with them either, and as he stretched out and let himself attempt to struggle into wakefulness, he became aware of something sitting on his bedside table that hadn’t been there when he’d gone to sleep after a long shift at the bar.
He stifled a yawn and plucked it from where it sat, curiosity dawning over him and a smile immediately coming to his lips as he skimmed the letter over quickly. He didn’t recall having actually mentioned to Han that his birthday was coming, but he wasn’t surprised that his roommate had figured it out anyway. After all, he seemed to have a way of finding out things. Running a hand through his already messed hair, he settled into the tangle of blankets and began to read the letter properly.
A warmth settled into his chest as he read the words his friend had left for him, a smile unable to fade from his lips as he absorbed the words. He recognized that it was happiness that settled over him, a sense of adoration and affection swelling in his chest before he stretched and fumbled for his phone on the table. ‘Happy Birthday, precious boy!’ read a text from his mom, along with a link to her Instagram that proudly displayed a photo of he and his mom when he was only around 6, a pout written on his chubby little face while his mom beamed beside him. He replied to the post with a simple “Love you, Mom,” knowing that she and her fans would have taken notice.
There was a text from his step-father that was a joking, ‘Happy Birthday you shit,’ and a few random ones from acquaintances and clients he knew. He filed them away in the back of his mind to respond to later and instead went to text Han.
[text: Hannie] You’re ridiculous but thank you. [text] I love you too. [text] Don’t tell my mom but your letter might be one of the best gifts I’ve gotten in like ever [text] you cheesy fuck [text] you know you’re my best friend, right?
The words were a cover, of course, to the truthfulness that lingered in the words sent above them. He sighed, and slipped out of the bed in order to slip into the shower, Han having made his day so much brighter with the simple effort of his words.
