ASL: 30 - female - Manhattan Beach
It’s been 3 weeks and I am still not settled in. A good friend of mine pointed out yesterday that it was probably going to take 6 months in stead of 6 weeks, yeshh :-) Living 4 blocks from the ocean, in family minded Manhattan Beach, I’m so grateful to be welcomed by the Cottle Family and for my brother and the best American Airlines pilot DJ Carlin for making this happening 2 years ago when I first met them.
Shit just got real, je suis une belge à L.A. And if only it would be natural for me to have a french accent in my English, I would have already made so many friends. Americans love the broken French accent, I on the other hand hate it, but wouldn’t mind to fake it. You must think that I’m getting the hang of this city already: faking it. If only that was true, it would have been so easy to pile up the clichés and look at it with an o-so-grounded-European look, like we do with so many other countries outside of Europe and especially by judging North America. No judgement here. Not any more. I’m the “new girl” and I need to adapt: embracing a very young “culture” by staying true to myself and looking through glasses of eternal amazement, good and bad.
3 weeks in L.A have taught me a couple of things
- craigslist is a serious platform here in Cali - thinking in miles is much easier than initially thought. - H&M prices are exàctly the same as in Europe - Gel nails should be done professionally, not with a home manicure studio - I love dogs - sending an email to 300 of your best customers in “to” field in stead of “bcc” field is a basic mistake, even for a 30-yr old professional - undermining the Managing Partner is not done, not even for a 30-yr old professional - swimming in the Pacific Ocean is freezing and it can also kill you - I need to learn the basics about the undercurrent - 18° Celsius stands for “rather chilly”. - dogs with sunglasses are common in West Hollywood - people who keep on asking for your ID to check if you’re over 21 are to be considered as your best friends, even if it’s just the local, bitchy cashier. - Advise on Tinder appearances is something one should take seriously - People look up to people who master the parallel parking (forever thank you to Kim Devue for teaching me how to drive) - smoking is so 1999 that it makes you look “Old Skool” - TP-ing (pronounced teepee-ing; meaning covering someone’s house in toilet paper) is done after midnight, while dressed in black = very discrete of course :-D - the freeway is NUTS, and I will keep on saying this, over and over again. - Netflix and HBO are the best - organic food is not a luxury but a basic need. - you don’t tip people when you do take-out or should I just admit that I hate you people of Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza’s.
