Harlem Renaissance photographer James Latimer Allen (1907 - 1977). This brief video shows the artist at work in his studio in 1937. Allen was a cultural leader in Harlem before and during the Great Depression. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served with the Office of Strategic Services. After the war, Allen moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the federal government, abandoning professional photography altogether.
