Homework #1: Learning to Love You More + FIBER
For your first homework assignment of the semester, check out the images above which come from the book Learning To Love You More by artists Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher.
In a nutshell...the collaborative public art project known as "Learning To Love You More" offers a refreshing take on how people think, act and love. Created by Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher, the web-based project, begun in 2002, offers more than sixty 'assignments' that can be completed by anyone. Completed assignments are posted on a web site and July and Fletcher have curated a selection of the submissions to create the book. (I’ll have the book in class on Wednesday if you want to see it.)
For the first part of your homework assignment, please click on the above images which are the 63 assignments created by the artists from the book. Choose 1 of the assignments to do and post it onto your blog.
For the second part of the homework assignment, create your own assignment inspired by the spirit of these assignments that incorporates ideas, materials, techniques or processes of “fiber” in some way. Write up your assignment prompt and create an example showing how to do your assignment and post to your blog.
Learning to Love You More Assignments are meant to bring people together and give folks a new way to feel something.
How can you use the characteristics or qualities of fiber to accomplish these objectives? How can fiber bring people together in ways that other materials might not be able to? How can you use the everyday familiarity we have with fiber as human beings to create an experience for someone to feel something in a new way?
Use the hashtag #homework1 to identify your completed homework and post it to your blog by February 28th. It will be graded as part of blogcheck #1.
