I finally have found some quite time to lay down the main chords and start to think about layering. Lyrics are usually the last thing I do as I feel they are married to the melody and are built by the melody. I guess it’s a really meta way of thinking, but I believe that songs, in a way, are already written before you write them. It’s like in painting the way surrealists or abstract expressionists will tell you that the process is automative and is driven by something undefinable in the depths of your imagination and creative ocean. So that moment when you find the perfect lyric, it feels as though that was always meant to be the lyric, nothing else would have been right. Anyway, I digress.. In thinking about layers I have been playing around with a bass line that I am starting to think has strong melodic and harmonic possibilities for some vocal parts of the song. I am a big fan of backing vocals and the impact the right harmonies and syllables can have on the ambience of the track as a whole.
